The 2015 BET Awards was one of the best of all time. The event was highly-anticipated. The special event was held on Sunday, June 28 in Los Angeles, California. BET celebrated its fifteen-year anniversary of having the award show, and the stars were certainly in attendance. The entire weekend featured amazing events Friday through Sunday. It truly is the BET Experience. The awards show was hosted by actress Tracee Ellis Ross and actor/comedian Anthony Anderson. It was an outstanding show and they did a phenomenal job hosting.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar opened the show with a phenomenal performance. The crowd was exhilarated and looked forward to what was to be an outstanding evening of music. The first award was given to Terrence Howard in the category of Best Actor. The star thanked many people including Lee Daniels and Taraji P. Henson of the hit show “Empire”. Next up was Janelle Monae performing “Yoga,” and Jidenna who sang “Classic Man”. The second award was given to rapper Nicki Minaj for Best Female Hip Hop Artist. The star took her mother on stage with her to accept the coveted award.
Kendrick Lamar who opened the show also became a winner when he was awarded in the category of Best Male Hip Hop Artist. Chris Brown then took to the stage to perform a few of his latest hits with Tyga, and Omarion also performed as well. It was a high energy performance that had the crowd excited. The Weeknd then performed two songs at the event, including the hit “Earned It” from the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack. The crowd was surprised to see Alicia Keys who joined the star on the song, and those in attendance loved it.
Kelly Rowland took to the stage to present the award for Best New Artist. Charlie Wilson surprisingly joined her after briefly scatting onto the stage. The award went to the talented Sam Smith who unfortunately was not in attendance. Anthony Anderson accepted the award for the singer. Donnie McClurkin then performed an inspired tribute to the late Andrae Crouch.
Sean Combs known as “Puff Daddy” and “P. Diddy” took to the stage and the crowd erupted with cheers and danced for the entirety of the performance. It was truly a flashback in time for many. The star celebrated twenty years of Bad Boy Entertainment, his famous label that is responsible for so many great and talented stars. Mase took to the stage to join Diddy. 112, Faith Evans, French Montana, and even Lil’ Kim were there as well. The stars performed a medley of Bad Boy’s biggest hits. There was a tribute of sorts to the Notorious B.I.G. as well. Pharrell Williams then joined Diddy on stage and Chris Brown danced his way on stage as well. It was truly one of the best performances of the night and everyone was on their feet singing and dancing. Bad Boy has a great library of hits and the fans are hoping for more. The performance reminded us all of what a force Sean Combs has been and continues to be in the world of music.
The next award was truly special. Smokey Robinson was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award, presented by Sean “Diddy” Combs. Robinson has a library of thousands of songs. He was an integral part of Motown Records. He is a legend who has written countless hits, not just for himself but for others as well. The star took to the stage to accept the award, and he had a lot of wisdom to share with the audience. He shared his thoughts about fame and success, and how fame can be like a “bittersweet wine” that is “intoxicating”. He also thanked God for his success and for being in the world of show business that he loves so much. Tori Kelly, Robin Thicke and Ne-Yo performed the tribute to Robinson. The singer then performed as well, singing hit songs like “Cruising”. Robinson is an icon, and it was great to see him accept the award that he is so deserving of.
Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, and Chris Brown then took to the stage to perform together. Minaj and Mill held hands at the end of the performance. The Centric Award went to The Weeknd for “Earned It” although he was not there to accept the award, despite having performed earlier with Alicia Keys. Next up were three stars from “Empire”: Yazz, Jussie Smollett, and Serayah. They performed a medley of songs and it was amazing to see them perform.
Anthony Hamilton performed a tribute to Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, and B.B. King, reminding everyone of the talented stars that are no longer wish us physically, but will always live on through their music. Big Sean then took to the stage and it was an exciting performance. He sang a couple of songs including “Blessed”. E-40 then joined the star on stage and it was obvious to see why Big Sean is a star. He has star power and hit songs that continue to be successes on the charts.
Finally, the most anticipated moment of the night was the tribute to superstar Janet Jackson. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (the legendary production team) fittingly presented Jackson with the Ultimate Icon Award. However, before Jackson took to the stage to accept the award, Tinashe, Ciara, and Jason Derulo performed the tribute. The stars danced to some of her greatest hits including “If”, and “Rhythm Nation”. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis reminded us of Jackson’s great success around the world. She has had Twenty-Five top ten hits, and has sold over one-hundred and forty million albums. The superstar took to the stage to accept the award, and she was greeted with thunderous applause and cheers. She thanked Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, her husband, her parents (Joe and Katherine Jackson who were in attendance), and the many fans around the world who have shown their continued support and loyalty. Jackson, like her famous brother Michael Jackson, is one of the most renowned performers in the world, and fans are looking forward to seeing her go on tour again, and are excited to hear new music from the singer.
Chris Brown took to the stage again, this time to accept two awards: the Fandemonium award and Best Male R&B Pop Artist. He thanked the fans (team breezy) for their support, and also expressed his gratitude for his daughter. K. Michelle then performed as did Tamar Braxton. The two were then joined on stage with the legendary diva Patti LaBelle. The performance was outstanding and LaBelle showcased her incredible talent which is evident with every note that she sings.
Nicki Minaj won another award, the Coca Cola Viewers Choice Award for the song “Only” which features Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown. She expressed her love for the fans that voted and that show their support for her work. She also stated the importance of following one’s dreams.
Singer Rihanna took to the stage to debut a preview of the trailer for her new video for the hit single “B**** Better Have My Money”. The video will premiere on Thursday, and judging from the preview, fans are excited to watch the newest video from the star. Fetty Wap closed the show with his wildly popular and successful hit track, “Trap Queen”.
The award show was truly one of the best. So much talent was showcased, and those in attendance had an amazing time. It was a great year for music, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s show. BET does things well, and does so every time.
