Happy August Boston—as per usual, there’s a heavy month of music coming through town. The first two weeks of August are especially rife with exciting acts. Without further ado:
Thurston Moore—frontman of the pioneering (and now defunct) indie rock band, Sonic Youth— released his fourth solo LP last October. After 30 years in New York, the alternative rocker moved to London and wrote The Best Day—a record that explores the local character and cultural breadth adorning his new home. He told Sound City Liverpool earlier this year, “I used to have these fantasies in the 70s about leaving New York and coming to London to hang out with Public Image [Ltd.],” and perhaps that was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Don’t miss of the greatest experimental guitarists of all-time.
James Taylor just surprised everyone at Newport Folk Festival by showing up and finishing his set from 1969, which was cut short by the moon-landing. He’s coming back to Boston on August 6 and, do you really need to know anything more than that? It’s James Taylor…
Remix maven Jamie Smith (aka Jamie xx) has collaborated with everyone from Four Tet to the late Gil Scott-Heron. He’s also one of the members of dream pop trio The xx. Jamie may just be one of those guys we look back at 40 years from now and say, “wow, thank god music had Jamie; else, where would we be now?”
All that renown and the guy’s never even released a solo album—until now. Jamie xx solo debut, In Colour, has been out for two months now—don’t miss your chance to see it rendered live.
Mac DeMarco is a burgeoning singer/songwriter whose style has been described as ‘blue wave’ and ‘slacker rock’. He counters his chillest of vibes with bizarre antics that help maintain his mythical stature as half hipster Casanova, half dildo-wielding weirdo. In just the past couple weeks, DeMarco’s hosted an open invitation BBQ in Brooklyn, played Jenga with Shamir, and, of course, toured the land to dish out his universally lauded feel-good jams.
