Thanksgiving is almost here, which means that it is time for many to prepare fabulous meals for the entire family. For others it is time to decide which restaurant to visit for their holiday meal. Over the years this examiner has listed several area restaurants open during Thanksgiving, however there is one thig that was not considered: just because a restaurant was open on Thanksgiving does not mean it is worth visiting. Thanksgiving just doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving when your meal consists of a Grand Slam or you are serenaded by singers crooning about Waffle House. That is why this examiner is not listing every restaurant open on Thanksgiving just the ones that he would visit.

Admittedly a buffet may not seem like an ideal choice for Thanksgiving, however when you stop and think about it how many Thanksgiving dinners are all-you-can-eat events? Think about Joey wearing Phoebe’s old maternity pants on Friends so he could eat an entire Thanksgiving meal. Furr’s usually offers customers a special menu for that day. This year’s menu consists of items like:
- Carved Turkey Breast
- Pepper Encrusted Roast Beef
- Popcorn Shrimp (mix that with the roast beef listed above and you have some great Surf-N-Turf)
- Pumpkin Cheesecake
- Red Velvet Cake.
With the variety of items on their menu there truly is something for everyone at Furr’s. So if you are not visiting anyone this year, stop by Furr’s for the most diverse meal that you will have.
Furr’s Fresh Buffet is located at 5707 Rogers Avenue Fort Smith, AR 72903.
Bob & Ellie’s
Bob and Ellie’s is one of the best places to dine at for Thanksgiving because the restaurant itself captures the essence of what Thanksgiving is all about: family. Bob and Ellie’s is a small restaurant run by a couple who treat everyone like family, and the home-spun atmosphere evokes memories of far simpler times. In keeping with the holiday season, Bob and Ellie’s is serving Turkey, Dressing and Ham for $8.99. This meal comes with two sides to choose from so you could stick with traditional sides like Green Bean Casserole or opt for something different like fries or okra.
Bob and Ellie’s is located at 6500 Highway 271 Fort Smith, AR 72901.
There is a tradition in Van Buren that very few want to pass up: Thanksgiving at Big Jake’s. While Big Jake’s is primarily known for their steaks, every year they offer Meemaw’s Turkey and Dressing for Thanksgiving. This meal is based on an old Gardner family recipe that has been passed down through generations and served to customers for just as many years. What separates this meal from those at other restaurants is that family recipe. In years past, Meemaw would come to Big Jake’s to regal customers of tales of the bygone era.
Big Jake’s Cattle Company is located at 1702 Fayetteville Road Van Buren, AR 72956.
