Tonight’s Discovery Channel episode of “Bering Sea Gold,” is titled “Baggage.” As the winter ice mining is half over the miners have quickly learned that the government is shutting them down on April 15th, making it the shortest ice mining season on record. With only eleven days left to mine, Shawn Pomrenke is 100 miles from Nome at The Bluff, where nobody has mined for over a century. Back in Nome, the rest of the miners are in a rush to find the motherlode, but as of now; nobody has yet to make a big score.
When an airplane flies over The Bluff, they wonder if it is someone joyriding, but when Steve Pomrenke exits the plane, Shawn knows that the boss is there to put pressure on him. Back in Nome, Vern spent $100,000 for a brand new dredge and in a new dive hole could pay off if they can find gold. The robot he spent his money on does not find gold; it just digs. Spenser went down today to try his luck.
At the Paddy Wagon, Kris Kelly is still pissed that his brother Andy went back to work with their father. When Kris went below, his neighbor and brother Andy was down there too. Kris spotted Andy only five feet away, and the war was on under water. As they pulled at each other’s equipment; Andy took off, but Kris was worried about his brother and went after him to make sure he was alright.
At The Clark, Zeke and Emily are checking out their sluice. Zeke is not happy to be a teacher to the women and realizes that working with Emily was not his best decision. At The Bluff, Shawn is below while Steve and Cody are listening to him mining below. Steve went with his dousing rods to find a better place to look. As Steve was walking above, Shawn was basically going in the same direction.
On the Wild Ranger, Spencer is dredging as far as his tether will reach on his hunt for gold. When his air is acting up, he comes to the surface. When he reached the top, his air line was frozen, and Vern was mad as hell. At The Bluff, Jacob is checking out Steve’s theory, even if Cody believes it is witchcraft.
At The Clark, their second cleanup was a bust, now Zeke wants to end the partnership. Emily is dismayed that he is giving her the silent treatment. While on the Paddy Wagon, Kris is looking for a payday, while his father and brother are doing the same back in town. His father and brother got thirty-one grams, which is about an ounce and Kris got 2.1 ounces.
Zeke is meeting with Emily, and her father is along for her moral support while Zeke is trying to end his partnership because Emily brings nothing to the partnership. At The Bluff, Shawn and Steve took a ride to see an old abandoned dredge that was used back when mining was a big thing there over a century ago.
At the Wild Ranger, the crew wants to move their operation, but Vern refuses. He states that he cannot afford to move. When the crew advises him that he cannot afford, not to move, he finally relents and the two-day operation begins.
Emily knows that she and Zeke must let go of the “Baggage” that is keeping them at odds. She comes over while he is below and asks him to come to the surface. They share a good laugh and take the edge off immediately.
At The Bluff, the sluice brings up some pickers and Steve admitted that Shawn was looking to the future the way a miner is supposed to be, but the nuggets he saw ensured that there is a future, just like Shawn wanted there to be on this episode of “Bering Sea Gold.”
