Friday night’s Discovery Channel season premiere episode of “Bering Sea Gold,” is titled “Countdown to Gold.” As the winter season begins the miners start arriving, not by boat this time, but by winter dredges and snow machines. One miner is flying over his chosen territory by helicopter; Shawn Pomrenke and his crew is avoiding the Nome miners this time by going to The Bluff. Here he hopes to do another kickass season like he did last season by a wide margin. They spot an old wash plant from mining long ago and find a good spot to start the hunt.
Emily Reidel may miss the season because of her crew’s lack of getting the correct permits. Vern Adkison has a new dredge that cost over $100,000 and plans to pay it off in one winter season. It is a submersible dredge that is supposed to replace crewmen by doing the digging and suctioning. Emily heads to find her sworn enemy Zeke, now that she lost her crew and has no mining permit. She offers an olive branch in the form of her divers who are soon to arrive and any of her gear. She and Zeke form a partnership again and time will tell if it works.
The Kelly Boys Kris and Andy, without dirtbag dad Brad are a team again, on their dredge called Paddy Wagon and setup their camp next to their father. The boys plan to screw over their father the same way he did to them. When Dave Nelson went down below for Brad, he quit within five minutes due to ear problems. The boys had no trouble lauding their father’s lack of accomplishment. Brad called it chicken shit problems, but it is not the first time in Nome.
On the Wild Ranger, his new super-dredge will hopefully, avoid such chicken shit problems, as the divers will do most of the operation from above. Diver Derek McLarty accompanied it down, but it has never been tested in twenty-five degree water like the Bering Sea.
In Nome, the Pomrenke shack is preparing for their trek to The Bluff. They are taking lots of supplies; as they plan to strike the motherlode. On the outskirts of town, Zeke is introduced to his three crew members; all women. Zeke has his druthers about their abilities as dredgers, but for their looks, he is on point.
The Kelly boys are still completing their dredge; as Brad’s second diver Byron went down to try his luck, but his head starting hurting and his hands were freezing. Does Brad have the warm water on or why did the regulator freeze up? Kris made his first dive but he too is having a problem, but he took the hot water from his suit to unfreeze the regulator and got to stay below and he found some shiny stuff.
At the Wild Ranger, they are checking to see if there is gold, and there certainly is. Outside Nome, the Zeke & Emily partnership is starting its first day of operation as Emily drags the Clark shack to its home on the ice. First snag; they hit an ice hold and had to pull it out before it landed at the bottom of the sea.
Shawn met his first hurdle as his snow machine was halfway buried in snow. As they lifted it out, they spotted wolf tracks as big as a human hand. When they arrived at their destination, they setup their camp on this episode of “Bering Sea Gold.”
