As for the history of weather for Memorial Weekend goes this past holiday will probably be remembered as one of the nicest grouping of four days. There was plenty of sunshine, cool breezes and comfortable temperatures that gave a festive atmosphere to this weekend of solemn remembrances. For those not wishing to travel too far from home there was plenty to see and do in the Cleveland area.
One of the most popular events for Memorial Weekend is the Berea National Rib Cook-Off which celebrated its 17th year at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. With free parking and just $5 entrance fee it left plenty of money for food.
In all, 16 rib teams competed for six trophies that included a first, second and third place judged category, Best Sauce, People’s Choice and Pick of the Pig (that is determined by the Miss Berea Pageant contestants).
This year’s rib teams included: Armadillo’s Rib & BBQ Company, Big Boned BBQ, Desperado’s BBQ & Rib Company, Mojo’s Rib Shack, Old Carolina BBQ, Pig Foot, Poor Piggy’s BBQ, Pork Belly BBQ, Pork Brothers BBQ, Sgt. Oink’s, Smokin’ Joe’s, Hog Wild BBQ, Smokin’ T’s, Sticky Ribs, Swhinery BBQ and Texas Pit BBQ.
It was on Monday afternoon that the various trophies were handed out to the winners. First Place went to Poor Piggy, Second Place went to Porky Chicks (who also won the Best Sauce Trophy), Third Place went to Old Carolina, the People’s Choice Award went to Texas Pit and the Pick of the Pig award went to Armadillos.
Along with the ribs, side dishes and all manner of pork BBQ fans could munch on kettle korn, candied nuts, cotton candy, fried veggies, corn on the cob, dippin’ dots, fudge, old fashioned sodas, French fries, pizza, Stromboli, baklava, lemonade, elephant ears, funnel cakes, Euclid Beach Custard, onion rings, fried Oreos and Twinkies (and fried everything else), cotton candy, snow cones, perch, chicken, poppers, mozzarella sticks, shaved ice and ice cream, caramel apples, candy apples, salt water taffy, popcorn, bloomin’ onions and various fruits dipped in chocolate.
There was also a children’s activity area where the youngsters could burn off some extra energy that included a super slide, kiddie bouncer and rock climbing wall. Musical guests reached all genres of music with the groups performing on the Southwest General Health Center Stage. The bands included Haywire, The JP Blues Band, Colin Dussault’s Blues Project, Dixie Soul, The Stickers, Morgan White, The Coalie’s Run Band Cruisin’, Ace Molar, My Manic Episode,Escape, The Chardon Polka Band, Brigid’s Cross and The Clayton Brothers.
