When the Belmont Stakes is run on June 6, 2015, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, American Pharoah will be trying to win the Triple Crown and earn horse racing immortality. Here are the horses running in the Belmont Stakes this year who are most likely to spoil American Pharoah’s Triple Crown bid in 2015.
American Pharoah is even money or less to go on and win the Belmont and the Triple Crown this year. I think he has a decent chance to win but even money or less is too low odds for this horse racing fan to wager on American Pharoah to win the Belmont and the Triple Crown in 2015.
As a long time horse racing fan it would not shock me to see any one of the horses running in the Belmont win the race. I’ve seen too many crazy things happen in races to be shocked by the outcome. I’d be surprised to see some of the horses win the Belmont this year but not shocked.
Belmont horses most likely to spoil American Pharoah’s Triple Crown bid in 2015
Materiality will be making only the fifth start of his career in the Belmont. He won his first three races very impressively by being on or near the lead but he hesitated at the start of the 18 horse field Kentucky Derby and never got near the lead.
Despite not being near the lead, Materiality still passed 11 horses from the second call in the race to finish 6th beaten by 7 3/4 lengths by American Pharoah. With only 10 horses going in the Belmont and the race not having an abundance of early speed horses Materiality should have no trouble being on or near the lead and he likely poses the biggest threat to American Pharoah’s Triple Crown bid.
Madeforlucky won the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont in his last start on May 9, 2015. The race was a big improvement over his previous two starts in which he was beaten by nine lengths and 6 1/4 lengths respectively by American Pharoah in the Arkansas Derby and the Rebel Stakes. If Madeforlucky repeats his Peter Pan performance in the Belmont he’s a big threat to beat American Pharoah in the race.
3. Carpe Diem
Carpe Diem has won four of six starts in his career and in all four wins he was on or near the lead and was first or second in each race by the second call in the race. In his last start in the Kentucky Derby, Carpe Diem was inside in fourth place two lengths behind the leader at the first call but then faded to 6th place by the second call and he finished 10th beaten by 11 full lengths by American Pharoah.
The Kentucky Derby is a one of a kind race and it’s possible that Carpe Diem just didn’t like being inside behind horses and he threw in the towel in the race after he couldn’t get to a spot he liked. If that’s the case, the 2015 Belmont is not loaded with early speed and if Carpe Diem shoots out to the lead or tracks in second he’s a big threat to American Pharoah.
Carpe Diem worked five furlongs in :59 seconds flat on May 22, 2015. That’s a very good time for a five furlong workout and indicates that Carpe Diem is probably ready to run in the 2015 Belmont Stakes.
Good luck to American Pharoah and all the horses in the 2015 Belmont Stakes. It would not bother this horse racing fan in the least if American Pharoah goes on and wins the Triple Crown.
