The Bellevue Center Demolition Party ended on a whimper, not a bang, although the large crowd seemed to enjoy the event. The party had been promoted with photos of local politicians in the small bulldozer which was parked in front of the mall’s old main entrance. Many people expected to see walls come down, although clearly any kind of knocking down of walls could not be done with a crowd on hand for safety reasons.
Other residents came to enjoy the food trucks while still others came for the live music and the fact it was a local event — no matter the magnitude. Members of the local Bellevue Area Meetup were on hand to enjoy the bar-b-cue, Mexican food and other food trucks and to see what the little bulldozer might do.
However, after the event several people expressed some mild disappointment on Facebook and other social media that the demolition segment of the party was “much ado about nothing.” The small bulldozer basically took out one shovel of flooring and debris before the crew put the same boards back up in the same places at the entrance to keep vagrants and animals out of the empty mall.
“I was looking for the wrecking ball.. etc.. when I saw the small bulldozer I figured it was a ‘show’ of things to come.” — Michelle
“I had a good time with my friends but thought they should not have called it a ‘demolition party’ since there was no demolition to it. Frankly, I don’t get what the ‘party’ was about.” — Jack
“There was no bang…broke windows for the demolition…still good that things will be moving forward!” — Paula
“I didn’t plan to drive over but some friends talked me into dinner at the food trucks. We skipped the speeches, had dinner behind the food trucks where it was more quiet, and had a nice time. What kind of speeches needed to be made about one of Bellevue’s failures anyway? Is someone running for office? I thought it was kind of sad but enjoyed being with friends.” — Mary
“I heard they cut the white pieces to make them break apart when the guy did the demo but it didn’t work out that way. Still a good time, great music and wonderful to see neighbors/friends I hadn’t seen in a while. ” — Michele
The bang is still to come as the mall is slated for demolition sometime in the future — minus the party.
