SOLS coordinated a pop-up shop earlier this summer in New York to share their sole inserts and a workout that promotes movement. Consumers and media were also invited to partake in a BARE class taught by Dr. Emily. BARE® is the only barefoot balance training workout that is uniquely designed to improve balance, hip strength and core endurance. NYFE: How did you get involved with SOLS?
Dr. Emily: I was first approached by SOLS in early 2014 to be a biomechanics / movement advisor to their product development. I now sit on their Advisory Board and work in collaboration between SOLS, Podiatry and consumers.
NYFE: Can SOLS be worn in any pair of shoes?
Dr. Emily: SOLS works best in a sneaker or loafer type shoe. Their goal is to eventually do a more high heel / dress shoe friendly orthotic, however all orthotics take up space in shoes – so certain shoes are actually best having the orthotic built into it.
NYE: Can you share a few benefits to working out barefoot? When and where is the best time to kick off your sneakers?
Dr. Emily: Barefoot is great because it stimulates all the nerves on the bottom of the foot – nerves which are important for maintaining balance, activating the core and absorbing impact forces. In shoes all of these nerves are blocked which can lead to a higher injury risk.
Best surface to train barefoot is a flat, hard, stable surface such as a dance studio and gym studio floor. Outside is great but more natural surfaces are best. Avoid training barefoot on yoga mats or concrete.
NYFE: Are there simple workouts you can do just to work your feet?
Dr. Emily: You can do an exercise called “short foot”. This is my favorite and probably the king of all foot exercises. Other exercises include different exercises for the toes or standing on one leg. And although it really isn’t an exercise but more of a release standing on golf balls or Yamuna Foot Wakers is also great for the feet.
