Barbakoa is located at 1341 Butterfield Road in Downers Grove, Illinois (about a block east of I-355 on Butterfield).
Barbakoa is an attractive and lively restaurant with a definitely upscale look and ambiance. Although they are technically not a sports bar, they do have large TV’s in the bar area where you can watch your favorite games. They also have two private party rooms available for baby showers, corporate events, etc. Their outdoor patio has approximately 15 tables and a centerpiece fireplace.
Although their sign on the building identifies them as ‘Tacos and Tequila’, Barbakoa is a whole lot more!
Barbakoa has an impressive selection of Tequilas. They’ll stock between 45 to 60 different bottles of tequila on any given night.
I was invited to visit Barbakoa on Tuesday September 22nd. I was eager to sample some of Chef Dudley Nieto’s creations in anticipation of National Taco Day coming up on October 4th.
I had the chance to interview Barbakoa Restaurant Manager Oscar Ybarra. I asked him for his keys to success. Here are just some of his comments regarding his drinks:
- Sangrias are made to order… never pre-mixed.
- All Margaritas are handmade with hand squeezed limes.
- All Mojitos are handmade with the strict original recipe.
Chef Nieto started out with a trio of guacamoles: traditional; with pork grinds; and with spicy pineapple. All three disappeared in about 3 minutes… enough said!
The guacamole was followed by ceviche. This wasn’t a large portion, but was a perfect prelude to the onslaught of tacos to follow.
We were treated to several types of tacos. All I can say is that they were all consumed quicker than the guacamole. We were presented with two side dishes: Corn and rice & beans. The corn was a little spicy and delicious… you are now warned.
And finally, for dessert, we were treated to Chefs Nieto’s Churros. They arrived at our table warm with caramel and chocolate toppings on the side. I will guarantee you that once you eat the first one, you will not be able to stop. They were simply incredible!!!!
Barbakoa does a great job with their Happy Hour and Daily Specials.
