On tonight’s Spike episode of “Bar Rescue,” Jon Taffer and his crew came to El Cajon, California to Myer’s Pour House on this episode titled, “Jon Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost.” In 2011, serviceman Jeremy Myers retired from the Coast Guard with hopes of following in his grandfather’s entrepreneurial footsteps. He borrowed about $300,000 from his grandfather, but when the 2008 crash hit, he filed for bankruptcy and had his mother cosign for the bar. Making a great living, suddenly Jeremy stopped coming to the bar which he believes is haunted. He soon learned that his staff too experienced the haunting and without his presence, the profits are going down the drain. So he called in Jon Taffer and his team from “Bar Rescue” to help.
As Jon and master bar trainer, Lisamarie Joyce sit in his SUV watching the going on inside the place, neither likes the name which brings to mind poverty. Jon introduced Lisamarie to two friends who will be doing the recon for him. Matt Mira one of the co-hosts of The Nerdist podcast with Chris Hardwick and Jordan Morris one of the co-hosts of the Jordan, Jesse, Go! podcast are going to check it out for Jon. Matt and Jordan asked the bartenders about the ghost sightings and it seemed very real as they discussed the fact that someone died inside the bar. Lisamarie observed the over-pouring of the alcohol as the bartenders made the drinks. There was no sign of owner, Jeremy and the bar was being given away. Jon finally had enough and went inside to talk to Nicole, the bartender.
When Jon went in, he spoke to Nicole and Lina, and Jeremy finally arrived. Jon asked him a few questions and he admitted that he was scared of the ghost. Jon told him it was all about him; and that his grandfather will lose $300,000 because of the ghost and his mother will lose her house because of the ghost. Jon told him that ghosts do not like crowds, so to keep the ghost away; he should fill the bar with people.
The next day when Jon arrived, he certainly did not discount the ghost, and had each of the staff recall their scariest moments. When he asked the staff why they came there if they were afraid, they told Jon they had no choice. This statement hit the nail on the head, and Jon told Jeremy that he had no choice; unless he wanted to lose his grandfather’s money and his mother’s house. He then showed them what they lost in the last three days using Partender. They poured $14,400, but only sold $7,500 and gave away $6,900 for three days. This translates to $330,000 a year in lost revenue. So they immediately got to work with Lisamarie. She had each one pour one and a quarter ounces of liquor and measured them all. Jeremy’s was the closest to the right amount, which showed that as an owner, he knows how to keep his profits in check and should be there to watch his bottom line. Nicole continued to argue with Lisamarie until she had enough of her. Jon then announced for tonight’s stress test, they will be using vodka they can be proud of and have respect for it. Ketel One is made in the Netherlands by the Nolet family, and the bartenders will operate in half-hour shifts. The one who pours the most drinks in the proper amounts will win a trip to their distillery. The line outside was huge and Jeremy went outside to welcome them in. Jon will be giving then each a piece of paper with red on one side and green on the other. Their job is to find the red ones and interact with them to turn it around to green. Jon then told them after each bartender had their turn, “Shut it the F@@k down!”
Jon then went over the bartenders’ production. Nicole was the weak link in the room, while Derek was a star behind the bar and Jon does not believe he should be working the door. As for the winner of the trip to Holland, they will have to wait until tomorrow for the announcement when a special guest comes in to reveal the winner. Then Jon brought in Amanda and Chris to get rid of the ghost and allow Jeremy to close up by himself. The medium told the ghost that he had to leave and return to where he belonged. Jeremy immediately felt relief that he did actually leave the bar. Everyone left, and Jeremy closed up.
The next day Lisamarie announced the new cocktail program she and Jon conjured up for them. She made the cocktails and the crew loved them. Then Jon announced his special guest, Carl Nolet, Jr. of the family who has been making Ketel One vodka since 1691. Then Jon announced that John won the contest and because Derek belongs behind the bar, he was joining him and Lisamarie was going with them right now! Bob Nolet met them at the door of the distillery and gave them an education they never expected. When they returned, it was just in time to unveil the new ghost-free bar. As they all turned around at Jon’s count of three, they saw the new name; The Study Lounge.
Inside, the theme was books and it resembled a library, warm and inviting. It was a place people would like to stay and have a few drinks. Jon stated that his first bar with a ghostly theme was Spirits on Bourbon that embraced the ghost of Edward DeBoire and he wants the staff to embrace their ghost.
The line was again a long one, this time Jeremy had no qualms about inviting people to come in. The bartenders were doing their thing and the people, including the staff loved the new warm environment on this episode of “Bar Rescue.” Six weeks after the relaunch, sales have increased thirty percent, Nicole continues to pour correctly, and the ghost has not haunted Jeremy of the staff since.
