On tonight’s Spike “Bar Rescue,” Jon Taffer and his crew came to San Diego, California, on this episode titled, “Big Sister’s Watching.” Sissy Xue came from Hong Kong in 2003 and then in 2013, she opened Filling Station Pub, across the street from the Miramar Marine Corp Air Station. The military is dear to her heart because her son is now in college and the Air Force Reserves. She hired sexy girls to be bartenders, but fired them before they could be fully trained. She has sixteen cameras and can watch the bar from anywhere and when she caught a bartender texting, she called on the phone to tell her to stop.
Sissy owes her father $400,000 and is stressed because if the bar closes, she will lose everything. She called for help to Jon Taffer and “Bar Rescue.” Jon sat in his vehicle with mixology phenom Phil Wills for the bar and for the kitchen Nick Liberato, who can turn an average cook into a great cook. They observed Sissy yelling and cursing at her bartenders.
Jon sent in Mike Costa and Dave Palet sportscasters who have a top-rated sports talk show on XTRA 1360 AM, to do the recon. The guys ordered drinks and got what the clueless bartender wanted to serve them. Each drink they ordered was disgusting. Because there were no cameras in the bathroom, the bartenders went in there and drank alcohol. When Sissy was confronted by Jon, she said she had to unwind because of stress caused by her debt and her lazy bartenders. Jon asked them if they respected her and not one did.
The next day, Jon gave Sissy a stern talking to about respect. Sissy then admitted that she did not like them or trusts her bartenders. Phil came in to teach the bartenders how to make a real drink. Nick Liberato met Ted, who was the cook and gave him a quick lesson.
As the stress test commenced, Sissy was walking around just looking around and not really paying attention to anyone. Suddenly, the kitchen was flooded because the drain was clogged. Jon told her it was her fault for just watching through a video screen. Jon then shut down the kitchen and made Sissy mop the floor.
The next day, Jon returned and told Sissy that he sent Roto-Rooter in order to clean the drain that was never cleaned. She agreed that she must trust her employees. Jon brought her son in to meet with his mother and Jon. She is very proud of him, and Jon commended them for their courage to come to a new country and learn the ways.
When the bar was completed, they met outside for the unveiling. Sissy had a fresh air of trust about her, and her demeanor was so different. Then Jon counted to three, and they turned around to see the new name was Off Base Bar. The interior was beautiful and much like an officer’s club. Mike and Dave returned for the grand opening and were very happy with the change. Jon’s friend and Marine/Purple Heart recipient, Samuel Deeds who was honored by Crown Royal for his service attended the grand opening too. Now Sissy has a future that looks as bright as her red dress thanks to Jon and his crew on this episode of “Bar Rescue.” Six weeks after the relaunch, bar sales are up thirty percent; food sales are up one hundred percent, and Sissy continues to earn the respect of her employees and no longer uses the security system to spy on them.
