One of the simple joys in open-world games is the freedom to destroy the world’s surrounding. The Just Cause series is one that embraces destruction – so much so that an Achievement/Trophy in Just Cause 2 was to destroy 30 objects in 60 seconds. With Just Cause 3 coming to PS4 and Xbox One soon, atombash.com spoke with Francesco Antolini, Principal Designer on Just Cause 3, about the level of destructibility the game will offer and learned that some things can be destroyed permanently.
The Just Cause franchise wants you to destroy as much as you can, and that tradition lives on with Just Cause 3. Antolini tells us that not everything in the game will be destructible, and there is reason behind this decision. Antolini emphasizes that while it’s “very easy to begin designing a game” like Just Cause 3 and say that everything is destructible, it could create problems.
“Think about the grappling hook, the grappling hook needs things it can grapple to in order to propel you into the sky. If I let the player destroy everything then that would cut their feet and not have any actual points to grapple,” Antolini said.
However, while certain objects cannot be destroyed, there are those that can be destroyed permanently. Antolini explains that some constructs can be destroyed forever, while other things can be destroyed again and again. The more you destroy, the more beautiful the world shall become.
“Some things that get destroyed are destroyed forever, so the more you destroy the world, the more beautiful it becomes. Then there are buildings that can be destroyed at will like bridges, fuel stations, and other things can be destroyed again,” shared Antolini.
Just Cause 3 releases on Dec. 1 for PS4 and Xbox One.
