The Mad Max universe has already seen a triumphant return to the mainstream spotlight, as the film that released a few weeks back has enjoyed significant success. Avalanche Studios is hoping the same will be said about their upcoming open-world game Mad Max, which is scheduled to launch this Sept. 1.
Mad Max will be featuring an element that many games, like The Walking Dead and Life is Strange, have become famous for. In an interview with PS Access, Magnus Nedfors, who is the design director on Mad Max, talked about the universe Mad Max will take place in and the element they felt was right for the game.
“The Mad Max universe is a really great universe to have a game [that provides players with choice]. When you look at the universe, the world it takes place in, it’s a huge place. You have long sight lines everywhere. I think [choice] is the right thing for the game,” Nedfors said.
When the feature is used in a meaningful manner, choice can be one of the most powerful aspects of a game. Whether it is something emotional, material or otherwise, choices help players truly feel like they are shaping a game’s world, story and characters. Given the open-world setting, it’ll be interesting to see how Mad Max implements it.
When you create a new world, they are always many, many different things and influences that contribution to its creation. For many people, inspiration comes from all sorts of aspects of life and Earth. Nedfors explained what some of the team’s ultimate inspirations were and the type of references they took from real-life settings.
“Obviously we have drawn inspiration from the Mad Max universe that exists in the movies, but [we’ve also drawn inspiration] from other places. In the beginning it’s only a lot of sand, [and we think] what can we do, but then you start looking at our real-world and how different locations like rock deserts, dried out sea beds. We looked at what’s really underneath our water, how would the world if we take the water away from a sea bed? We have coral reefs, we have sulfur come up in the air. There are a lot of current locations that have brought along inspiration,” Nedfors said.
These are some interesting things to ponder, if you are Avalanche Studios. The studio has a major year ahead of them with the release of Mad Max for PS4, Xbox One and PC on Sept. 1, and then Just Cause 3 will follow it sometime in the future. E3 2015 should present a great location for people to learn more about the game and we’ll be sure to keep you informed.
