The body count was much more than first anticipated when police came across the gruesome scene of a truck filled with the decomposing bodies of migrants along an Austria highway. Yesterday an estimate of 20 to 50 bodies were thought to be inside that truck, but the actual count is 71 dead. The remains include four children and one infant, all migrants being smuggled into the country.
According to Fox News on August 28, it looks as though the 71 people inside that refrigerated truck had suffocated. The truck was found abandoned just east of Vienna in the emergency lane on the highway. Officials in Austria held a news conference Thursday saying 59 men, 8 women, 4 children and 1 infant were dead in this heartbreaking event.
The truck was found on Thursday and police believed it had been sitting in the emergency area since Wednesday. The truck needed to be moved to a different location before the bodies were removed and an accurate count of the dead could be taken.
The truck was “leaking decomposed body fluids,” a scene which was describe yesterday by MSN News. The truck was found on Austria’s eastern Burgenland province and the chief of police at that location reports that the Hungarian police had taken seven people in for questioning. Out of that seven, three were arrested early Friday in connection of this crime. Two of the suspects are Bulgarians and the third is Hungarian.
According to The Wall Street Journal today the three arrested are being called human traffickers after allegedly smuggling these migrants as far as that highway stop and then leaving them to die. This is not an isolated incident, but it is one of the larger number of migrant fatalities from being smuggled in by land.
It appears that at least some of these migrants were fleeing Syria, as a travel document from that country was located among the bodies during this investigation. The migrant problem in Europe is at crisis proportions as people are dying being smuggled into the countries in conditions human beings should not be exposed to.
On Friday authorities from Libya were dealing with two capsized boats filled with migrants with that body count feared to rise to 200. Most of the deaths during the migrant crisis have occurred at sea. Can you imagine how these people suffered in the back of that truck as they suffocated to death? This is a horrendous way to die, but apparently these smugglers collect the money for transport and don’t care about the human lives they are transporting.
Officials said that smugglers will charge an astronomical amount of money and promise safe passage just to abandon the group. Sometimes, like seen on the Austria highway this week, they abandon the trucks with people still locked inside.
