Upon doing a little research on Cole Porter, this writer tried to understand why there wasn’t a more diverse group of actors and attendees that normally show up for the Alhambra Theater & Dining musicals? First-time attenders and tablemates of Ms. “V” presented this question to her. The dialogue of “Anything Goes” was more for the mature audience in the house during the second night’s performance.
Even though this writer recognized some of the songs, the gist of the show (and many of the dance routines) reminded her of Dorothy Provine and the television series, “The Roaring Twenties”. Some of the tunes may be recognizable by most baby boomers like: “You’re the Top,” “Friendship,” “I Get a Kick Out of You” & “It’s De-Lovely.”
On a more positive note, before the first act closes, the entire 23-perons cast takes the stage for a sing-along and tap-dance to the song “Anything Goes”, which drew momentous applause from the entire audience. The cast of this show consists of a very talented group of singers, actors and dancers.
“You could probably hear my jaw hit the floor when I saw it. Dave and his team did an amazing job here. For 48 years, we’ve never had a production with this much height. It’s breathtaking,” said Managing Partner Craig Smith. Adding to the nautical influence, the Alhambra features a set that is two full stories tall, designed by David Dionne. Dave took out the familiar stage and built a “cruise ship” right on the Alhambra floor. If you attended the Alhambra presentation of “Phantom”, you will have an idea about this transformation.
