In time for the recently released “Ant-Man” motion picture, Hasbro has released a number of toys featuring Marvel’s miniature hero. Among them are Ant-Man’s own 3 and 3/4-inch Infinite Series action figure, with flying ant vehicle, and an assortment of 6-inch Legends Infinite Series action figures focused on the Avenger. All are available now.
The 3 and 3/4-inch Infinite Series “Ant-Man” action figure, with flying ant vehicle, represents one of the most iconic images of the character. The figure is presented in the film costume and is an excellent representation. This “Ant-Man” figure has a number of points of articulation, particularly, for this scale of figure. Including double knee joints and wrist joints, it has a total of 16 points. Ant-Man’s belt is from a separate mold, though non-removable. This small (no pun intended) touch adds further dimension to the figure. This, in addition to the highly detailed sculpt and many points of articulation, are necessary to bring value to the figure as it comes with no other weapons and accessories. After a few hours of play, the figure can still firmly stand for an extended period for those who like to display their figures.
What it does come with, however, is the flying ant vehicle. While it is great to have a character-specific vehicle that is actually appropriate for the character, as opposed to, say, a Hulk car, the flying ant may be a source of frustration for both children and older collectors. The “vehicle,” as it were, is made from a light plastic with the head, 6 legs and wings attaching via ball and socket joints. Though it would have been nice if the ant was sculpted with open mandibles, so one can grab vile villains with it, the overall look of the ant is well done. Unfortunately, the head and, particularly, the limbs do not snap firmly into sockets, making them prone to falling out with very little contact.
Also, it is worth noting that, while Ant-Man can be sat upon the back of the ant, there is no way of securing the figure to the vehicle. Certainly, this is more visually accurate, but it is an additional consideration when considering one’s child’s method of play or display preferences.
Ant-Man is, also, the focus of the latest assortment of 6-inch Legends Infinite Series action figures. The new set features Ant-Man, Wasp, Tigershark, Bulldozer (of the Wrecking Crew), Grim Reaper and Giant Man. Each figure comes with one component of the Build-A-Figure Ultron action figure, based on the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” version of the character.
The “Ant-Man” figure, specifically, is another heavily detailed and articulated figure, also representing the film version of the character. It has a whopping 27 points of articulation. While one or two joints are already exhibiting some looseness after a few hours of play, the figure can still stand for an extended period. If one is considering a single figure purchase, this figure may be the best value. Not only does it come with miniature versions of Ant-Man, his flying ant and the film version of Yellowjacket, but the Ultron piece included is the villain’s head. Considering that Ultron is an artificial intelligence, this component by itself is playable, as the android is still operational as just a head. One can imagine, if Hasbro were to release a second wave of “Ant-Man”-related figures, they could make the Build-A-Figure an alternate body for Ultron, utilizing the same head.
The aforementioned mini Ant-Man, flying ant and Yellowjacket provide an additional level of play. The figures are not articulated and stand, roughly, an inch tall. Ant-Man is positioned to sit atop the flying ant and sets in well. Yellowjacket, surprisingly, stands quite well on its tiny feet. So, for the price of one figure, one can have Ant-Man battle two different villains at two different heights. That is value. Frankly, the mini-figures included here could act as the inspiration of a whole line of action playsets, done to scale, for Ant-Man. If there was any character to revive 1-inch figures, it is Ant-Man.
The “Ant-Man” 3 and 3/4-inch Infinite Series action figure, with flying ant vehicle, and “Ant-Man” 6-inch Legends Infinite Series action figures are available now. They are recommended for ages 4 and up with a suggested retail price of $19.99. They can be purchased at most nationwide toy retailers, as well as the Hasbro Toy Shop.
