Why is it that during the first Democratic debate of 2015, the media reported that Hillary won, but poll after poll showed that the people thought Bernie was the clear winner? Bernie did not win by a slight margin, but by a huge majority according to polls, yet the media’s opinion was consistently for Hillary. Why?
Are our elections rigged? When the US Supreme Court ruled that corporations are a person for campaign purposes, the justices went against every common sense rule of voting. Corporations do not get a vote, people do. And when a corporation pays for a particular candidate to win, it is not the collective voice of the employees. It is not even the result of a poll taken of all those who work for that corporation. Rather, it is the voice of one or at most a few at the top, who want to rig the elections, so that they effectively get more than one vote.
Every American knows that our election system is rigged. We have the greatest members of congress that money can buy. We call this legal bribery by the innocuous term campaign contributions. And we have nobody who has the courage to change the system. Or, if we do, there are too many who would not support such a bill to get rid of the billion dollar bribery industry.
So, what is a Christian to do? Every election is a choice between two evils. We get to pick the lesser of two evils, people who the super wealthy who get to manipulate the system believe they can control better than other candidates. After all, who among the super wealthy is going to support a candidate that wants to make them pay their fair share of taxes, or give back some of the excessively large portion of the national pie that they have taken for themselves. Greed rules!
When this country got rid of a greedy and selfish English king, little did we realize that there is more than one kind of king. There are political kings and there are industrial kings. We have experienced both in our nation’s history. More recently the oligarchy has defeated our democracy and turned it into a country ruled by the kings of commerce. These elites give us their innocuous candidates who will not rock the boat and give us back our country. We face another four years of rhetoric, where nothing changes. The rich get richer and the middle class gets poorer.
During the American Revolution, some people used that old saying that we have no king but Jesus. That saying is still true today. There is no salvation in our corrupt political system. There is no king that can save America except Jesus. Our only hope is in him, not in our election system, and not in our financial system. As a nation, we do get to vote for Jesus every Sunday. We need to get back to Jesus.
