The Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Akron Children’s Hospital has earned a national reputation for delivering high-quality, specialized, up-to-date treatment to some of most seriously ill children in the region. Each year the center cares for approximately 95 new children diagnosed with cancer, 200 children battling sickle cell disease, and 450 children with severe bleeding disorders. One of the things that makes The Showers Family Center so special is the level of care and support that is delivered to the patient and his/her entire family. This blanket of support is only possible through the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and groups like the LOPen. The LOPen has now raised over $500,000 supporting a school teacher for hospitalized patients, transportation assistance to families, funeral expenses for needy families, cancer research, the expansion of the bone marrow transplant program, and the “LOPen” Teen Lounge located on the inpatient unit. This “teen only” hangout offers a jukebox, pool table, tons of movies and board games, and Xbox and a Playstation 3 all in a teen-friendly atmosphere. Helping kids feel like normal children is essential to the recovery of patients and this center helps .As the event draws closer we will have some exclusive interviews with some of the guests and find out why they decided to become involved with this great cause . I hope to see you all there .
