Anne Meara has died at age 85. The actress and comedian, who worked with her husband Jerry Stiller for more than 60 years, died of natural causes on Saturday, according to CNN on Sunday. While Meara was best known as one half of the legendary Stiller and Meara comedy team, she also had an impressive acting resume, including a recurring role on the long-running CBS sitcom, “The King of Queens.” Meara played Veronica Olchin, the mother of Spence Olchin (Patton Oswalt) on the CBS comedy. Meara’s character married real life husband Jerry Stiller’s character on the “King of Queens” finale.
Following the sad news of Anne Meara’s death, several “King of Queens” alums, as well as the actress’s famous son, Ben Stiller, posted messages about the late comedy legend. Ben Stiller also thanked fans for their kind words following his mother’s death, saying the entire Stiller family feels lucky to have had Anne in their lives.
Meara appeared in nine episodes of “The King of Queens,” which ended its nine-season run in 2007. Actor Kevin James, who starred as Doug Heffernan on “The King of Queens,” Tweeted: “Anne- What an incredible talent. I’m so thankful for the time I had with you and Jerry. You and your family are in my prayers.”
Leah Remini, who played James’ wife Carrie Heffernan on the show, posted an Instagram pic of Meara with the caption: “Rest In Peace Anne Meara. Thank you for the laughs on and off the screen of The King Of Queens. Your kind of Chutzpah will be greatly missed. It was an honor to know you. Our thoughts and prayers to her family.”
Patton Oswalt, who played Meara’s hapless son Spence on the sitcom, paid tribute to his TV mom by writing: “You were fun to work with and hilarious from the get go. And you took sh-t from no one. #RIPAnneMeara.”
Indeed, it’s clear that Meara was known for her saucy language on the set of the popular CBS series. Actor Victor Williams, who played family friend Deacon Palmer on the hit sitcom, Tweeted: “Anne Meara was amazing. The fiercest curser I’ve ever met. But her f-bombs were merely armor for her gentle heart. Rest in Peace Ms. Olchin.”
Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller were married for 61 years and worked together for nearly six decades. From TV commercials to comedy sketches to that “King of Queens” finale, it’s hard to imagine one of them without the other. Meara, who died suddenly at age 85, is survived by her husband and her children, actor Ben Stiller and daughter Amy Stiller, as well as her grandchildren.
