Whether you are an ex-smoker, overweight couch potato or food junkie addicted to highly processed, sugared snacks, the wonderful thing is you can change things easily. Yes, running has a HUGE effect not just on your physical health, but also your mental/emotional outlook. Before you begin any running regimen, consult your doctor to make sure you have no underlying conditions or ailments that may interfere with running. It is always a good thing to start your healthy new life with a FRESH start by getting a physical, blood work, etc.
How to start? First, go to a ‘running store’ to be fitted for proper shoes that support your body type and gait. Don’t go to a department store! They have no knowledge of over or under pronation and this is vital in picking the right shoes so that you don’t wind up getting injured and side lined before you get fully started!!
Next, pick out a comfortable distance you feel you can safely complete. If it’s around the block, then start with a slow jog until you feel you can’t run anymore. Don’t stop, rather walk briskly until you feel recovered enough to begin your jog again. Do this every day or every other day gradually increasing the distance you jog. When, and only when you can run the entire block without walking, do you increase the distance. Don’t worry about speed yet! The goal is to develop endurance as you gradually increase your distance. You will notice at the beginning, that you switch from your breath running out before your legs, while other days your legs will fatigue before you run out of breath. This is completely normal!
After awhile you’ll be running without counting blocks. Endorphins will naturally kick in and you’ll experience that infamous ‘runner’s high.” There will be days you feel you can run forever; some days will be an effort. This is normal as well!
The goal is to achieve more of those Forest Gump runs than not.
Before you realize it, you’ll be thinner, fitter, filled with energy and getting better sleep. Your moods will be elevated and you will realize the HUGE effect running makes in your life. You will look forward to YOUR RUN time, because of the JOY and empowerment from each and every run. In fact, you’ll CRAVE your run, because they set you FREE!
Set yourself FREE, because YOU Certainly CAN Run . Let Dawn show you how, by supporting you down the path that sets you FREE!
