It’s time for another episode of “America’s Next Top Model.” We start the episode as the models return from last week’s judging to view the winning photo of Devin on the flat screen TV. Devin lets everyone share in the viewing of his special message from Tyra, who gives him a #TyTyTip. When he looks up to the heavens it’s magic, but when he turns profile and looks down, not so much. We don’t see exactly who he chose to share the Tyra Suite with him, but we find out that Devin, Mikey and Ashley are close friends who have named themselves “DMA.” We also see that Mikey and Ashley have a bit of a thing for each other, and they’re shown taking a bubble bath and making out with each other.
It’s time for our first Tyra Mail.
“A hero never gives up. Fierce & Love, Ty”
The models are questioning the meaning of this mysterious Tyra Mail.
That evening Hadassah decides to play a joke on Devin, whom she says reminds her of a scarecrow. (I can kind of see her point there, actually.) She dresses up like a scarecrow with sunflowers and a hat and takes Bello, who is dressed like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, and they go into Devin’s room.
Devin doesn’t appreciate the joke and tells Hadassah that she thinks she’s better than everyone. She disagrees, and in her confessional she says she would never say anything like that, even if it’s true.
The next morning the bus picks up the models and transports them to their photo shoot, which is a large yard filled with military tanks and other vehicles. Yu Tsai welcomes everyone and says that they will be posing with these “fierce objects” and “fierce fighters.” He then introduces Alex Minsky and Melissa Stockwell. Both are military vets who received the Purple Heart for their service in Afghanistan and Iraq. Both also have each lost a leg, and they wear an artificial limb.
Melissa is now a Paralympian while Alex is a model. They each tell their story of how they lost their legs, and Ashley in particular is moved by their stories, and it brings her back to when she told Tyra and the judges about being molested by one of her brother’s friends when she was a child.
It’s time for hair and makeup, and each of the models poses with either Melissa or Alex. As everyone is having their hair and makeup done, Yu Tsai comes in the tent and introduces special guest Joe Zee, who is a fashion editor. He will be helping them with their styling for the shoot.
The photographer for the shoot is once again Erik Asla. Hmm, can’t Tyra find anyone else willing to shoot her photos for the show? It’s rather odd that they have only had one other photographer, and that week they also used Erik Asla in the same shoot. Not a big deal, but just an oddity.
First to shoot is Devin, who Yu Tsai says never listens to him on the set. He tells Devin that while he may be signed to many agencies, he has not really gotten anywhere because he doesn’t listen while he’s on the set. Devin has a bit of a problem with his shoot, but eventually, it seems he gets a decent shot.
Hadassah also has problems during her shoot. She just looks dead. Yu Tsai claims, “You’re done. There’s no modeling happening.”
Others who have some problems with their shoot include Dustin who has a problem taking things seriously, and Stefano, who thinks he knows it all.
Some models that seemed to have mostly positive comments include Courtney, Bello, Justin, Lacey and Mikey.
Later on back at the house, Nyle, using his phone app, says, “I wonder when the makeovers will be?” That gets everyone to talk about what possible looks they could have, and Hadassah says she fears that they will give her something too edgy, and she might want to just go home, rather than to have them shave her head or something. She claims that having an edgy hairstyle won’t cut it in pageants, and she doesn’t want to not be able to compete after her time on Top Model is over. Wow, way to think positive!
As I mentioned last week, this week there will be makeovers, and next, the models are taken to the Cristophe salon, where they meet with Yu Tsai, Miss J and Cristophe himself. The makeovers are as follows:
- Devin – Damn near bald
- Dustin – Honey Kissed
- Lacey – Chic Bowl Cut
- Nyle – a Clean-up
- Ava – Model Mullet
- Courtney – Gone Grey (plus, they’re going to whiten her teeth)
- Ashley – Ty Chop (and they’re giving her contacts)
- Bello – Hair for Days
- Mamé – Curls Gone Wild
- Justin – Faux Hawk Fade
- Stefano – Floppy-Do
- Mikey – Big Trim
- Hadassah – Fierce Side Shave
As mentioned before, Hadassah wasn’t looking forward to the makeovers, and when she heard they were going to shave half of her hair off, she started to cry. Miss J talked to her, as did Yu Tsai, and eventually, she decided to go with it.
I was disappointed that they didn’t chop Mikey’s hair off, because I think he’d look so much better with short hair, but they left it long. When the stylist was done with him, he said he looked like his sister. Oh brother. I don’t think that is a good thing. He didn’t seem concerned, though.
Lacey had my favorite makeover. Her short, dark bowl cut looks really high fashion, and I think she’s going to go far.
And just when you thought we could get through the rest of the episode drama-free, we get some additional drama courtesy of Stefano and Mamé.
After the models returned home, several of them decided to go tape their confessionals for the day. Mamé explained that they have to do them daily to talk about what went on during the day. Mamé, Ava and Bello were the first to get lined up to go in and tape their confessionals, and Mamé decided to go downstairs to get a drink while she waited. In the meantime Stefano decided to go get in line to tape his confessional. When Mamé returned, he immediately told her he was next, very hostile-like. She said that she was next, and told him about going to get a drink. They argued and she flipped her huge “Diana Ross” hair at him, and he flipped his “floppy-do” bangs at her. It was silly.
But, we can’t have an episode without seeing the dreaded “Skull Mail” video, and everyone gathered around to read it.
“Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 12 of you will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model.”
The judges critique all the models’ photos as this week, without a challenge, that is the sole thing they will be judged on. Lacey, Ava, Mikey, Devin and Bello had good shots, while Stefano, Dustin and Hadassah, not so much.
The call-outs went as follows:
Stefano and Hadassah were in the bottom two. The judges aren’t sure about Stefano, as to what his brand is about. Hadassah is one who likes to be in control and be perfect, and Tyra says that “perfect is boring.” Who will stay? For me, both one of them could go and it wouldn’t bother me. In the end, it is Stefano who will be packing his bags.
Next week, the models will have a photo shoot where their photo will not be retouched. So, we will see who is relying on retouching to make them look good, and who can look great without any retouching.
As a photo retoucher myself, I’m really interested in seeing how this pans out for people. Tune in next Wednesday, September 1 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW to find out what happens.
