It’s time for another episode of “America’s Next Top Model.” We start the episode as the models return from last week’s judging, and Lacey and the others view her top photo on the flat screen TV before going upstairs to the Tyra Suite to see what Tyra’s #TyTyTip is this week.
Tyra congratulates Lacey for her best photo and her tip is that when Lacey tries to be sexy, she is looking a little slutty instead. Tyra finds this odd since Lacey is a virgin, and she gives her an example of slutty and sexy, so she’ll know the difference.
Mikey and Devin are viewing Ashley’s losing photo from last week, and Mikey is saying how sad he is to have her gone since they were really starting to get close. Devin knows that he needs to dial back the crazy because if not, he’ll be the next to go home.
Can Courtney take Ashley’s place in Mikey’s heart?
Meanwhile Bello and Courtney are chatting and Bello teases her about taking Ashley’s place in the bed between Mikey and Devin. She’s always had a crush on Mikey, so maybe this is her opportunity to do something about it. But later as she happens upon Mikey and Devin having some lunch, she tries to join them, and they leave before she can sit down. Mikey also says to camera that he realizes that Courtney likes him but they’re only friends, and she needs to not get that twisted.
The next morning Mikey again talks to camera about Ashley and how she has changed him. He has had confrontations with Bello and Hadassah, and he talks with them in the kitchen, saying he was wrong in his actions before and he’d like to start over and try to be friends. Hmm… is he serious, or is this just a strategy he’s using with them?
And now we learn what STEM means
Later that day, the bus picks up the models and deposits them at Panorama High School. Hmmm… what could be happening here? The models see Miss J along with a stash of clothing and shoes and accessories.
Miss J tells the models that Tyra has a special challenge for them, and everyone needs to go off to hair and makeup with a special stylist who will make them look not only stylish but smart. When everyone is all glammed up, they’re lead into a science lab where they see a class of girls sitting around the lab tables.
Miss J says that Tyra has a message for them. She pops up on the small TV at the front of the class and explains that she wants to talk to them about something really important to her… STEM. That stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Those jobs get a lot of Money, Power and Respect. She then explains that there is a big disparity in what men are making to what women are making. The men make $$$$$$ while the women only make $$.She says that they want to even out the playing field by women entering “STEM” jobs.
Today, the models will be making a STEM P.S.A., because as models, they have a lot of power to influence young girls. They will be making 6 second Vine on each of the three topics, Money, Power and Respect. They’ll be teamed up in threes, and the young girls will judge who has the best Vine. But first, Miss J introduces someone that will help them with their Vines. It’s Brittany Furlan, who has a huge Vine following.
The models will draw sticks. Each stick has one of three colors on it. The color you get indicates the group that you are in.
The teams are:
- Mikey, Hadassah and Mamé (Respect)
- Bello, Courtney and Devin (Power)
- Nyle, Lacey and Justin (Money)
The teams will have one hour to come up with their concept and film it. Brittany will be around to help them out.
Brittany visits Nyle, Lacey and Justin first, and they are making their Vine without speaking. Brittany likes their concept.
Mikey, Hadassah and Mamé decide to do all kinds of things, trying to explain what STEM is, and be funny about it. Brittany thinks that they have too many ideas and she’s worried about them.
Bello, Devin and Courtney want to do something where the guys are bullying Courtney while she tries to study, but Courtney says she will be something someday and show them. Brittany is a bit worried that like Mikey, Hadassah and Mamé, they have too many ideas and not a lot of time to do them in.
In the end, Mikey, Hadassah and Mamé seem to do well recording their video, as do Nyle, Lacey and Justin. Bello, Devin and Courtney aren’t so lucky as Bello accidently deletes their video with under 3 minutes to go, and they have to start over again.
The students viewed the videos and they really liked Lacey, Justin and Nyle’s video, saying that they all looked like models. They totally didn’t understand Bello, Devin and Courtney’s Vine. They really liked Mamé, Hadassah and Mikey’s video, which showed the girls getting propositioned by Mikey, and they walk off, and he gets on his knees and asks them to tutor him. In the end, they chose Mikey, Mamé and Hadassah’s Vine as their favorite. (I personally thought Lacey, Nyle and Justin’s Vine was better.)
The scores were as follows:
- Hadassah 10
- Mamé 10
- Mikey 10
- Lacey 9
- Nyle 9
- Justin 9
- Bello 8
- Courtney 8
- Devin 8
A Birthday party for Devin… the jerk
Devin mentioned earlier in the episode that he was turning 22 today, so Courtney decides to throw him a surprise birthday party. She decks out the back patio and everyone gets ready to sing him “Happy Birthday,” when Nyle decides maybe everyone can learn how to sign it. He shows them some signs and everyone tries signing, but it doesn’t work out really well.
Later, as everyone is hanging out on the outdoor furniture, Devin decides he wants to use Nyle’s phone to take selfies of himself and the others. Not cool. That is how Nyle communicates, and he had no way of knowing what was being said, or saying anything about it.
Finally he decides to just leave, and eventually some of the models apologized, but it just sucked that they didn’t even think that they were taking away his way to communicate just for their own pleasure.
A living doll
The next day, the bus takes the models to Showbiz Studios where they walk in on a photo shoot of Tyra posing like a doll inside a life-sized Barbie-type of box filled with doll accessories.
Yu Tsai welcomes the models and says that their photo shoot will be to transform themselves into living life-sized dolls. Once again the photographer is Erik Asla.
Tyra gives everyone a few tips for how to pose as a doll. She shows them the “Wide Eye Smize.” I totally don’t really understand, but ok. Next, is that your eyes follow the head as you turn different directions. Lastly, you need to isolate your joints. Sort of like a robot.
She then tells them they’ll each have a theme.
- Nyle – Boom Boom Bon Voyage
- Lacey – Tyra Taught Me Tooch
- Justin – Booch ‘N Baller
- Mamé – Werk the Runway, Like a Hallway
- Bello – Ugly Pretty Punk
- Courtney – Fierce Fashionista
- Devin – H2T-eed Up
- Hadassah – Flawsome Free Spirit
- Mikey – Savage Smize
Nyle and Hadassah do great during their shoots, but Courtney admits that she doesn’t know what a fashionista is. She has never seen Italian Vogue magazine, or even the American version. Oh boy! Girl is in the wrong competition without any knowledge of high fashion. She doesn’t do well during her shoot. Lacey does super well with her poses. She definitely has the doll down. Mamé does pretty well, but Mikey was just meh, and Justin had a hard time getting into the booch ‘n baller theme. Lastly, Devin had to get into the golf theme, and he just was not understanding it. Things aren’t looking good for any of the models that received low challenge scores – Courtney, Bello, Devin.
Back at the house, the models get the Skull mail!
“Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 8 will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model.”
What, Tyra? Say it isn’t so! Two are going home?
The models arrive at panel to find out that not one but two people will be going home this week. Yikes!
The call-outs went aws follows:
The bottom three are Devin, Bello and Courtney. The judges think Courtney has raw talent, but they are unsure of her strength. Devin can pose, and he can name his poses, but he has a problem being natural. Bello is androgynous, but they feel he is fading.
The first model leaving is Courtney. Will it be Bello or Devin who will go home? Bello has to pack his bags, and he doesn’t even hug the other models goodbye, he’s so upset. Wow.
It looks like next week the models will be going on go-sees. The problem is… they are going to be paired up, and the models they will be paired up with are the eliminated contestants. That is different than how it was done in previous cycles. So, it looks like the eliminated contestants will get to go on go-sees and maybe outshine someone who is still in the competition. Interesting.
The eliminated models are back for go-sees next week
Next week, “America’s Next Top Models” changes days and times to Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. So, tune in on October 2nd on The CW to find out what happens next.
