The 9th annual American Dance Guild (ADG) Festival is fast approaching and will honor master choreographers Liz Lerman—founder of the Dance Exchange, Doug Varone—Artistic Director of Doug Varone Dance Company, and Alice Teirstein—founder of Young Dancemakers. Over the course of four programs on Dec. 3 through Dec. 6, thirty-five dance artists from across the world will present their work at The Ailey Citigroup Theater’s Joan Weill Center for Dance.
“The American Dance Guild holds a unique position as both a promoter of the new and preserver of the living history of modern dance as an art form,” notes Gloria McLean, President of ADG. “Each American Dance Guild Festival honors at least two master choreographers from the past, and includes performances of their work along with emerging choreographers ranging from modern to post-modern to performance art to cultural hybrids.”
As such, Doug Varone and Dancers will perform Varone’s acclaimed ensemble work Lux with music by Philip Glass on Dec. 3 and 5, while Alice Teirstein’s 2015 Young Dancemakers will perform her short group piece, Journey, on Dec. 3 and 6; a video capsule history of Liz Lerman’s career will be presented at each program. In a diverse amalgamation of contemporary dance, the program lineup additionally includes everything from Buglisi Dance Theatre’s duet Sospiri (Dec. 4) to Merce Cunningham’s Suite for Two (Dec. 5) performed by the Cunningham Trust’s Fellowship Program dancers. Dance Exchange alums Martha Wittman and Adrienne Clancy from D.C., Jin-Wen Yu from Wisconsin, Imana Gunawan from Seattle, Gesel Mason from Colorado and a host of New York artists including Mimi Garrard, Tina Croll, Daniel Gwirtzman, Amy Marshall, and Nancy Zendora add to the mix of artists.
An awards presentation for the three 2015 Festival honorees will take place opening night, Dec. 3, in which Lerman, Varone and Teirstein will receive ADG awards for “Distinguished Artistry and Lifetime Achievement.” The evening will be followed by a Gala reception.
