We all know that anything goes when it comes to the MTV Music Awards. Last night’s show was no exception either. There were incredible performances by Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato. We watched as Bieber broke down in tears after a high flying performance to his new song, “What Do You Mean.” There was Kanye West seems to be happier than ever accepting the night’s most elite awards the Vanguard Award for his videos over the years. He even jokes he will be running for President in 2020 and he spoke of how he supports the work of other artists. There were moments of ridiculous too. Just take one look at the” I would be naked if they let me, Miley Cyrus.” Her performance as host was uneven. She was even called out by Nicki Minaj for her tweets earlier in the week when Cyrus spoke of the lack of respect she felt towards Minaj. Back in June Minaj had tweeted what seemed to be dissing Taylor Swift being nominated for Video of the Year. Last night Minaj and Swift made up, but Cyrus was called a Bitch by Minaj.
One aspect that is always interesting to talk abut the next day is who was wearing what. Two of the most interesting looks were worn by Amber Rose and Blac Chyna. In coordinating outfits that featured words that have been used to derogate the women and put those words front and center. They embraced such words as slut, gold digger and whore. While walking the red carpet, Rose explained what was behind the look. ‘It brings awareness to a lot of men and women that [slut-shaming happens] every single day,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘It has happened to me on so many different levels. I really have been through some things… I lived it. Maybe one day I’ll tell my story. ‘Until then I feel like if I can just help other women get through what they’ve been through, then that can also help me get to the next level in my life.”
Amber Rose is a self-identified feminist. In October, Rose will host an event called a “Slutwalk.” Slutwalk originated in Toronto, Canada when Heather Jarvis, decided that the shaming of women who are called sluts had to be stopped. The goal of the walk was to shift the attitudes that women who are victims of a sexual attack are at fault for what happened to them. Rose’s campaign will take place October 3rd and she states that her goal is no more sexual violence, not more victim blaming, no more derogatory labels, and no more gender inequality. The outfits that Rose and Chyna wore to the MTV Music Awards have been listed today as worse dressed. It may not have been a pretty outfit, but it sure was purposeful.
