Everyone knows you can order just about anything off Amazon.com, but pets, too? After our inquires and outcries from animal advocates, the retail giant changed its webpage today.
Amazon features a “Selling Services on Amazon” page which appears set up to attract businesses who want to target customers in their local areas. It says:
“Selling Services on Amazon allows top pros like you to offer your services on Amazon Home Services. Millions of people shop on Amazon and many of them are right in your neighborhood. With Selling Services on Amazon, we provide actual orders and easy-to-use tools, so you can focus on what you do best—delighting customers.”
There’s box on the right of that webpage which lists “Professions on Selling Services on Amazon” and “Coming Soon”. If you look at the photo in this article, which is a screen shot of Amazon’s webpage taken yesterday, it listed in the “Coming Soon” category: “Animal Breeder”. Those two words angered animal rescue supporters who worry about irresponsible breeding and selling dogs for a profit.
Boston resident Chris Lyle, started this online petition asking Amazon to ban animal breeders from marketing pets on their website. Lyle wrote: “We want to… #BanDogsOnAmazon a(nd) not allow the perpetuation of an already epidemic over population of dogs in the US and World the results in the approximately 10,000 euthanizations of dogs per day in the US alone for no behavioral or medical reason. For every dog sold you are literally killing another perfect dog sitting in a kennel crate in horrible conditions waiting for a home. There are a multitude of reason why this is a disgusting multinational “puppy mill” that Amazon.com is pivoting into becoming if not stopped.”
This author reached out to Amazon about the “Animal Breeding” category. Erik Fairleigh, who handles public relations, emailed us saying, “Thanks for sharing what you saw on our site, I did receive your email. That tab was a list of potential options that had been considered as part of our new Home Services business. We accept inbound requests from service providers who are interested in participating from a wide variety of businesses. We have no plans to offer any animal breeding services on Amazon.”
And today, the website was changed. Animal breeding is no longer listed as a category. Now “Coming Soon” begins with “Blind Cleaning.”
