Kristin Hoffman took a moment to dig a bit deeper into a project she has just finished entitled Amazing Space. She really digs deep into the interconnection, and does it beautifully through the medium of music. Here is some insight into her world.
VG: What do you think it is about music that connects people so deeply?
KH-I believe music is the language of our souls. It is the one language that all humans (and many animals) speak and share, on some level, and tap into on a regular basis. It has held an important role in our evolution and has been the vehicle through which we have passed down important information, healing practices and history throughout the generations.
As we, and everything in existence, are all made of vibration and frequency, music is literally able to stimulate immediate and lasting connections between us and our environments by sounding various notes and patterns that we recognize on cellular levels. We subconsciously, and often consciously, understand the messages of certain resonances and note combinations to hold specific meaning to us. For example on the most simplistic level, the sound of major scale notes played in sequence or improvisation equates to a happy or uplifting feeling, whereas minor scale progressions take us into realms of mystery, depth and often sorrow. The mixing of major and minor sounds and progressions can bring forth powerful reflections of the interweaving light and shadows of life as we know it…the waves of existence.
The beauty of music is that we do not have to be trained musicians to appreciate and interpret this language that we already know so well. Music is our birthright and we are all free to feel, interpret, experience and share it as desired.
VG: What draws you to the ocean, and how does that reflect in your music?
KH -Interesting question! I feel the theme and sound of the ocean come up again and again in my creative and sonic expressions. And when I go deep into meditation, I am aware, and part of, “the ocean of consciousness” in which we are all connected.
I think this connective quality of the ocean is what really stirs me. On the Earth, the oceans literally and physically bond us all together, no matter where we exist on the planet, and cannot be separated by man-made barriers or sense of ownership. Energetically, I love to think that we are all drops of water or waves, having our moments of individuality, but ultimately returning and part of the whole.
Ironically, in my day to day life, I have always been more of a forest person and would usually choose to spend my time climbing a mountain and immersed in wooded nature rather than by the ocean. But when I tune into the more ethereal parts of myself, I find myself back at the ocean, once again!
I began the 6th piece of music in Amazing Space, called Celestial Sight and representing the 3rd Eye chakra, by bringing in the sound of ocean waves. I feel this is an important transition point in Amazing Space and have witnessed this as the moment were viewers really begin to leave their daily lives behind and open to vaster and more peaceful parts of their Beings. The waves literally begin to wash away the old worries and open up a new space for higher sight.
VG: How did working on Amazing Space affect you?
KH – Amazing Space was a deep journey for me. I was constantly reminded that I am a small part of something much greater and full of mysterious beauty and asked to let go of a narrower mindset gathered from daily human life. I was going through a rather large shift in my personal life at the time of creating the music, so constantly zooming out and seeing the greater picture really helped me to get beyond my smaller limitations and expand into my fuller potential. So the main theme and goal of the Amazing Space experience began working for me right from the beginning!
VG: What moves you?
KH – I am most moved by simple, deep and authentic sharing connection between Beings and in the journey with Self. When people approach their own lives and their interactions with others in a truly authentic way, the magic, grace and beauty of existence is revealed and growth is spontaneous. This kind of honest interaction comes in many different forms, and definitely is often expressed through the vehicle of music! When I see, hear and experience this energy in action I am always moved, inspired and reminded of what is truly important about life.
VG: Other than music, do you have any other medium that you express yourself with?
KH – Yes! I love to cook and create beautiful, healthy and vibrant food for myself and others. I also am passionate about natural medicine and healing and am often found giving healthful advice to friends and family…when asked. :-) Hiking and being in nature are passions of mine. I also keep a book of inventions and am constantly coming up with new creations, names and ideas to assist in many areas of life! I’ve often said that I’d love someone to hire me just to come up with ideas for various projects and products.
Take some time to dig into her music, she’s definitely in tune.
