Many children love when school is about to end; looking forward to summer vacation’s beginning. Some children do not because that means that they will go hungry; when they are in school, they at least get breakfast and lunch provided to them thanks to government programs that are in place.
For many years, local children would not have suspected that their friends were going hungry while they were outside rampaging around and having a good time. They never would feel the severe pangs of hunger and could not quite picture what it would actually be like.
Many of us adults also did not realize that hunger was prevalent amongst our chums either. While many of us were not considered wealthy by any means, but compared to many, we were rich in all the right ways!
Social media and global exchange help people of all ages to grasp the once prevalent statement iterated that indicated that ‘there are kids starving in this world, so eat your vegetables.” It is nice to know that groups like the local DuPage County People’s Resource Center (PRC) that are striving to lessen the burden that hunger promotes. This summer, the PRC has held or will still be hosting their popular DINE AWAY HUNGER benefit that allows those that can afford to enjoy a delicious meal out and, while doing so, know that they just may be helping a neighbor in need.
The first of the three scheduled dates too place on Wednesday, May 13th in Southeast DuPage County. Participants on that day included DJ’s Sports Bar and Grill, The Sweet and Savory Spot, Uncle Bub’s BBQ Restaurant, Vincitori and Walsh’s Bar and Grill. Each of the participating restaurants was located in Westmont, Illinois.
If you happened to miss the first occasion, do not fret as the PRC has another date to mark up on the calendar. It is Wednesday, June 17th and will be held in Carol Stream, Winfield and West Chicago. Alberto’s Restaurant, Augustino’s Rock and Roll Deli, Culver’s, Manhattan’s, Red Apple Pancake House and Restaurant and Village Tavern, all in Carol Stream will be participating. Augustino’s Rock and Roll Deli and John & Tony’s from West Chicago will get in on the mix. Finally, Caliendo’s and John’s Restaurant and Tavern, both from Winfield will also welcome guests. For restaurant addresses, phone numbers and websites, go to www.peoplesrc.org/dahjune2015.
Lastly, the third and final event of the is summer will take place on Wednesday, July 15th in Glen Ellyn only. Participating restaurants for this final occasion include: Barone’s, fire + wine, Marinella, North Side Sports Bar and Grill, Santa Fe Restaurant and Shannon’s Irish Pub. Again, if you would like to Google the restaurant addresses, phone numbers and websites, you will want to go to www.peoplesrc.org/dahjuly2015.
When you do dine at the intended restaurants on the various dates listed above, 10% of your bill will go toward purchasing healthy food for the PRC food pantries so that families in our neighborhoods get the proper nutrition this summer. This way their children can run and play, happy to be out of school, too.
The PRC of DuPage has served over 31,000 each year. Visit www.peoplesrc.org under “Events” for Dine Away Hunger days and restaurant listings throughout the rest of 2015, too. Also, befriend them on Facebook at facebook.com/peoplesresourcecenter in order to keep up with all of their other activities and news, too.
