Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Alex G’s third EP, Share Your Story, is now available through all digital retailers. Five of the songs on the EP are based on fans’ personal stories. Out of 1300 submissions, five people have name-titled tracks on the EP: Alena, Ben, Charlotte, Muriel, and Royston.
When writing the EP, Alex found one common denominating factor. She explains, “I want people to understand that there is power in their story. I want people to come in and leave feeling more brave, or at least less alone. Everyone, at one point in their lives, has needed someone to hand them the courage to step up and speak.” For five fans in particular, she has shown that we’re not alone in the world, and sometimes all we need is someone to listen.
The first single, “Charlotte,” was the first story Alex chose. “Her story was that she didn’t have one,” she says. “I love that I get to prove her wrong. Everyone needs to hear Charlotte’s story, because I really think we can all find ourselves in it. I think we all feel unimportant and invisible sometimes, and knowing that we’re not the only ones feeling that way is, in a way, comforting.” The lyrics read, “Does anyone care if I’m even there? Speak up. We’re listening, your silence is crippling, and you’re not nothing.”
Alex G began posting videos of herself singing song covers in 2010, and her YouTube channel quickly became one of the fastest-growing on the massive site. As of September 2015, Alex’s page has over 194 million views and nearly 1.5 million subscribers, and an additional 688.4k followers across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
She created her channel in 2010, while in high school in Colorado, as a way to overcome stage fright, and her fan base started organically growing after each video post. To date, the top three cover videos from her collection include “Payphone” by Maroon 5 with 15.9 million views, “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with 14.5 million views, and “Roar” by Katy Perry with 14.3 million views. With her confidence growing, Alex began writing her own songs and released two successful EPs, Found (2012) and It’s You That I’ll Miss This Christmas (2013). Alex released her debut album, Growing Up, in 2014. The well-received album broke into the iTunes Top 100 chart and reached No. 24 on the iTunes Pop chart. During the creative process for Growing Up, Alex collaborated with several incredible songwriters and producers including Jason Mraz, Lauren Christy, Mikal Blue, and Jason Reeves.
In exploring her own story, Alex began to discover her voice. As she discovered the power of that voice, she discovered the power of giving a voice to others, to lending her voice to humanity, rather than to the pursuit of being an “unattainable superstar.”
Alex kicked off a one-month U.S. tour in support of the EP and to share her own story with fans. A two-week European tour begins on November 3 in Munich, Germany, and ends on November 15 in Liverpool, England. In several cities she will meet the fans the Share Your Story tracks were based on or who submitted their story. She hopes the songs written for one person will touch the thousands of people who hear them.
