Fans have been anxiously waiting for the season premiere to begin so they can learn more about Atz Lee Kilcher’s horrific fall, resulting in 25 broken bones and four surgeries. “Alaska: The Last Frontier” posted on September 28 to their Facebook page, “The new season starts THIS SUNDAY at 9/8c. Let the countdown begin with all new bonus scenes, including this darling video with Eve whipping up a makeshift playpen for little Findlay.” From what can be gathered from a preview video, it looks like a camera crew was with them when his accident occurred.
At the end of last season, Atz Lee spoke of his plans to move further off the grid and build a new cabin. How this setback affects his plans remains to be seen. According to Daily Two Cents, he fell while hiking at a place called Otter Cove in Kachemak Bay. He broke an arm, shoulder, ankle, hip, crushed several ribs and suffered two punctured lungs. Earlier this month he posted a photo on Instagram of himself while recuperating at home, and wrote that he is slowly healing and looking forward to walking soon. He’s also mentioned in other comments that it has been difficult to sleep with so many broken bones. Fortunately he has a great family support system and since wife Jane is also a nurse, he is in more than capable hands.
Besides Atz Lee’s incident, other Kilcher family members will undoubtedly be featured on the series as they go about daily life. Every season the film crew follows the annual cattle drive, which is usually handled by Otto and Charlotte Kilcher, to a place called The Head of the Bay. Patriarch of the family, Atz Kilcher, watches over the animals there during the brief summer period. His main focus is to keep predators such as the bears and wolves away from the herd. Sometimes he receives a helping hand from one or more of his three sons, Atz Lee, Shane and Nikos. Shane and wife Kelli recently moved to the family homestead and began work on their own cabin, perhaps they will have it finished by the end of this season.
Last year Eivin and Eve Kilcher welcomed their first child, adorable son Findlay. They try to include him in a lot of what they do so he will learn the homesteading ways. Fans have been wondering if there will be a sibling for Findlay in the future. Currently, there has been some fan speculation on whether Eve is expecting again. If she is, it will most likely be revealed during this season of the show.
