The ever entertaining and mercurial Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Florida, threatened to file a lawsuit if the Republican Party picks Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas as its presidential nominee in 2016, according to a Friday story in the Washington Times. Grayson made this threat while appearing on Alan Colmes’ radio show. The stated reason for the threat is that, in Grayson’s view, Cruz is not a natural born American as required for being president in the United States Constitution, having been born in Canada, albeit to an American mother.
Grayson, as he tends to do, is blowing smoke with his Cruz birther claims. As the Atlantic pointed out a couple of years ago, Cruz is a natural born citizen because since his mother was American, he was an American citizen from birth. It would not have mattered if Cruz had been born in Canada or on the planet Mars.
By the way, the same principle would tend to put to rest the Barack Obama conspiracy theory. Even if the president had been born in Kenya, he would still be a natural born American because his mother was an American. Obama was actually born in Hawaii, making the controversy rather silly.
Grayson, who is smarter than his volatile personality would suggest, likely knows this and is just making the threat to garner media attention for his Senate run in Florida, He even neatly related his quixotic threat to the illegal immigration issue. “Even the anchor babies actually are born here. He doesn’t even meet that qualification.” The implication is that Cruz, a hardliner on illegal immigration, is less of an American than are the children of illegal immigrants.
