Roker is hot under his weather collar. Al Roker believes a recent snub by a taxi cab driver was racially motivated, and has filed a discrimination suit with the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. The famous forecaster and 61-year-old Today star said a cabbie stopped for him and his boy, took a look at them, and sped off in lieu of a white fare standing a block up.
Writes MSN Entertainment: “While he doesn’t specify when the incident took place, Roker claims that a taxi driver initially stopped for him and his 13-year-old son—who was with him—to get into the car. When Roker reached for the door, the taxi driver took off and picked a white male customer a block away.”
Roker tweeted out on Nov. 22:
Filed a complaint today after getting passed up again by a NYC Yellow cab. Cabbie picked up a white guy a block away. Wonder why Uber wins? — Al Roker (@alroker)
“Service refusal goes to the core of the taxi industry’s social contract with the riding public and it will not be tolerated,” Taxi and Limousine Commission chair Meera Joshi said in a statement. “We’re grateful that Mr. Roker took the time to file a complaint, and I can assure him that we will investigate this thoroughly and take every appropriate action.”
Roker continued his tweets over the incident, and promised to update his fans:
This happens to folks of color every day. And while most cabbies do their job, there are those ignorant, racist ones who hurt the others.
What really hurts, my 13 yr. old boy was with me and asked why the cabbie passed us. I said, “Nick, ignorant people make dumb choices.”
Hopefully @nyctaxi weeds out the bad apples. Looking forward to a hearing and dealing with this. I will keep you posted.
According to NYC.gov, it is “against the law for a taxi driver on duty to refuse to pick you up because of race, disability, or destination within New York City.” The site also lists a number of misgivings and infractions one might decide to file a complaint over. Included among them is cell phone use, not driving safely, as well as a “dirty condition or bad odor in the vehicle, including cigarette smoke and body odor.”
Complaints have since been filed, and the yellow cab taxis in NYC, starting in January of next year, will be reduced from 13,645 to seven.
