Founded in 2014, the “What is…” series was created by a dynamic duo of bright, young and determined women, Zon D’Amour and Waverly Coleman. Entrepreneurs and women of color, the two sought out to fill the void of career uncertainty and industry variance through a panel and master class series of cultural influencers and trail blazers. The first installment was “What Is…A Producer?,” that took place in February 2015 during Grammy week and featured GRAMMY nominated music producers, esteemed YouTube creators, and a team of music festival producers. The sole purpose of this series is to provide millennials with a direct connection to industry experts for an intimate conversation and career building.
Zon D’Amour is the founder of AimerAmour Magazine, the media host for the “What is…” series, she works in partnership with Waverly Coleman’s United We Function event planning firm. They curate an interesting mix of professionals who delve into the nuances of their job highlighting the dichotomy in roles with similar titles such as Producer and Editor. On June 20th they hosted the “What is…An Editor?” event attended by a room full of bloggers, entertainment hosts, writers and entrepreneurs. The spirited panel included Danielle Cade, Senior Editor at ESPN; Dana Droppo, Senior Editor at Complex Media; Charles Handy, Lead Editor at REVOLT; Justin Hunte, Editor-in-Chief of HipHopDX and Courtney Whitaker, Weekend Editor at Madame Noire. The discussion clarified the ‘editor’ role for written, video and over all message for a publication.
One thing that all the panelists agreed on was their passion for creation and dedication to writing. They agreed that if writing and sharing your thoughts bring you the most joy, then really question if being an editor is the best career choice. Courtney Whitaker of Madame Noire expressed her challenge in finding balance between her love for writing and responsibility in editing. As an editor, she’s constantly proofreading other writers and admitted she doesn’t have enough time to write herself causing her to lose her unique voice. An editor, whether for online, print or video, is solely responsible for the quality of content and leads their team of writers to translate the message of the brand to resonate with readers. Dana Droppo of Complex expressed it may seem easy to proofread someone else’s piece and critique them, but it’s essential to encourage and development writers to stay on brand. Tone and consistency is very import in media and Charles Handy of REVOLT shared how his early stages as a video editor created the building blocks to understand appropriate content selection while working on various shows.
As digital content and social media changes the landscape of publishing content, the panelists had interesting insight on how a career in journalism has shifted from traditional print. “How am I going to make money?” was the question Danielle Cadet of ESPN asked herself after graduating from Northwestern University with a bachelors degree in print publishing. Since content consumption is constantly changing as the Internet evolves, she suggests staying ahead of the game and willing to change or get left behind. Danielle decided the best strategy for her was to go back to school and get a Master’s in digital publishing. It can be daunting figuring out how to make money in journalism, which Justin Hunte of HipHopDX expressed his main concern is advertising dollars haven’t caught up to the digital space. As editor-in-chief, it’s all about the bottom line and he acknowledged even though digital advertising is wide open for change, there’s a discrepancy in understanding how advertisers view computer vs. mobile consumers for advertising rates.
