A new agreement will allow students earning credit at any of Colorado’s community colleges to transfer those credits to Antioch University’s online bachelor’s degree programs. The agreement was reported November 19 on the breakingfinancenews.com website. Antioch University, based in Yellow Springs, OH will accept credits earned from any of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) into its online program, AU Connected.
Earning an associate’s degree at a community college and transferring those credits to a four-year college or university offers a more inexpensive way for students to attain a bachelor’s degree. Tuition at community colleges is typically significantly cheaper.
Students wishing to take this path to a bachelor’s degree must beware however, as the transfer of credit is not always guaranteed. Community colleges and four-year schools can make articulation agreements, which stipulate the conditions for guaranteed transfer of credit. If there is no articulation agreement between the two schools, students should seek counseling from the four-year school to explore the possibility of transferring credits before beginning community college classes.
The agreement with AU Connected and CCCS applies to all of Colorado’s 13 community colleges. However, there are also articulation agreements between individual community colleges and four-year schools. Moreover, articulation agreements can be limited to particular majors, so students must beware. For a detailed list, visit the CCCS website.
The articulation agreement between CCCS and AU Connected is all-encompassing. AU Connected will accept all CCCS credits earned with the grade of “C” or better as part of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, or Associate of General Studies degree toward the fulfillment of any of AU Connected’s bachelor’s degrees.
Antioch chancellor Felice Nudelman touted the agreement. She noted that “This is a creative and unique opportunity for students in Colorado who want to continue their education and are attracted to the unique values Antioch University – as an accredited nonprofit institution with a national reach – brings to our coursework and online degree programs. By creating a pathway that makes completing a bachelor’s degree affordable and attainable, we’re helping students achieve their educational goals while championing the university’s commitment to diversity, social justice and career advancement.”
