The criminalization of dissent of the theory of global warming proceeds apace, with the National Review noting in Saturday now Exxon Mobil, the oil and gas giant, is facing demands that it cough up financial records related to alleged bankrolling climate change skeptics. Exxon Mobil has even been accused to knowing that global warming existed since the 1970s and covering it up. The idea is being compared to the tobacco companies knowing that cigarettes kill people. Get ready for the law suits and the shakedown to follow. But Big Oil is just the first target. Big Beef is next.
As Market Watch reports, the global warming cabal, while plotting to make us turn off our air conditioners and drive Priuses, have already found a new target. It seems that cattle and sheep belch out more greenhouses gasses than any coal fired plant or gas guzzling SUV ever dreamed of.
“Ruminants such as cattle and sheep produce vast amounts of methane each year as a digestive byproduct. Pound for pound, methane is about 30 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide. Last year scientists writing in Nature estimated that human beings keep about 3.6 billion ruminants around the world and these account for about 12% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle — Big Beef — are by far the worst offenders. Their flatulence may kill us all.
“And, naturally, there are other consequences as well. It is to raise cattle that the forests have been cut down, especially in the developing world. And in terms of overall energy use, raising cattle is an incredibly inefficient way of creating food.
“Methane is very destructive to the planet, but it lingers in the atmosphere far less than carbon dioxide. So actions to reduce methane output will have a much quicker effect on the environment than actions to reduce CO2. We don’t have to become vegetarians, although it would help. Chickens and pigs produce a fraction of the methane of cattle. One of the easiest things anyone can do to cut their contribution to global warming is to switch from steak to chicken, pork and fish. “
The mind boggles about what will happen when the environmental lobby starts the campaign to ban cattle ranching and close down every McDonald’s and steak house in the country. Of course, there is nothing wrong with chicken wings, pork links, or even a good salmon steak. But there is also nothing like a beef burger between two buns stuffed with onions, lettuce, and tomato with mustard and ketchup. And a well-grilled steak, with some garlic butter on top, is proof that God exists and that He loves us.
One suspects that there are a lot of vegetarians who are also afraid that global warming will kill us all. Therefore, it won’t stop with beef and lamb. Better for the environment if we stop eating all animals and eat soylent green, they will say.
One also thinks that a prohibition against hamburgers and steak will work just as well as the prohibition against adult beverages.
