Now that summer is coming, it’s time to tone up. Would you like to get back into shape again after the long winter, but you’re not sure what to do? Well maybe Aerial Yoga, or traditional Yoga is just what the doctor ordered, so to speak. The Body Art Barn also known as The Body Art Studio is located just outside the town of Chester, New York, in a place called Blooming Grove, New York. It’s owned and operated by Michelle Dawson, who has been a yoga teacher and a Henna artist for many years. Her exploration and articulation of the ancient Vedic arts (founded by Curt Kallman) of both Henna and Yoga, plus fifteen years of traveling as a working artist, have brought her to a beautiful old barn on a black dirt onion field, no less, to set up her artistic getaway.
The Body Art Barn is a 200-year-old barn that has been recreated and given new life as a retreat center, a Henna studio and a yoga studio. In addition, the Body Art Barn is a community center, providing a calming, healing and safe environment for all who step through their doors. In addition to hosting 3 to 4 yoga classes a day as well as aerial yoga classes, the Barn is used for retreats, workshops and special events. There are summer classes for the kids too – as well as exhibitions that are held.
For those not familiar with Aerial Yoga, it is a practice that combines two traditional art forms – Yoga and Aerial Dance. Aerial silk hammocks are used to allow each student to enjoy aerial exercise while combining all the great movements of Yoga at the same time. Beginners as well as seasoned students are welcome at these classes. It takes practice and some upper body strength to utilize the silks, (as this Examiner can attest), but with patience and practice, you will improve. It truly is a performing art.
From The Body Art Barn website:
Aerial Yoga is a combination of traditional yoga poses done on the floor and postures practiced using a soft fabric “trapeze” (called a sling) suspended at waist height. This is the same fabric that aerialists use in the circus. With Aerial Yoga, body weight is distributed between the fabric and the floor allowing students to access traditional yoga postures in new ways.
Many newcomers enjoy working with the sling because with the help of gravity there is very little pressure or stress on the joints, especially the spine. Inversions are accessed easily with no strain on the neck, back or shoulders. Gravity eases us into optimal alignment with very little effort, and deep postures can be accessed through relaxation and delicious breathing. Our relaxation response is heightened by the unique sensations accessed in aerial yoga.
Hanging in the sling makes our core muscles fire. It is so much fun you don’t even realize what a great workout you’re getting. Transitioning in and out of the aerial yoga postures builds upper body strength, and resting in the postures heightens relaxation for a balanced effort overall. Aerial Yoga was designed for anyone of any age or fitness level. Complete beginners to yoga and/or aerial will be right at home. Students range in age from teens up to 70’s, with everyone working at their own level. If you have any physical limitations or concerns, consult with your doctor first.
In addition to the services above, The Body Art Barn offers Henna packages, at the Barn or at the location of your choice, along with In-House parties including birthday parties, bridal showers, sexy bachelorette parties, Ladies Night In – all starting at $125 per hour. Also offered are off-location parties and events which start at $200 for 90 minutes for groups of ten or less.
