Combat has been a staple in the Batman Arkham series ever since the game debuted and with the latest iteration in the franchise, Batman Arkham Knight, that has not changed. Rocksteady did so much to advance the game’s combat system and really didn’t let down fans who have become enthralled with it.
As you play through Batman Arkham Knight, you will earn experience points and those will enable you to unlock various upgrades that help you embellish your combat. Players will begin the game with an advanced set of combat skills, but as you go through Batman Arkham Knight, you will find out there is so much more to experience.
Combat upgrades can be a variety of things that range from increased damage that you deal out to enemies or brand-new move combinations. A timing bonus was an early upgrade I found to be quite beneficial when it came to the game’s combat. As I struck an enemy, if I timed my next strike right after the former, then my next strike would deal double damage to the enemy.
Another upgrade in Batman Arkham Knight I found to be quite interesting was one where if I had my special ability charged up completely, then any regular attack I landed would carry with it increased damage. Seems like a simple upgrade right? Well not necessarily because when I used my special attack on an enemy the damage bonus for regular moves disappeared.
This is a fabulous example of interesting, immediate cost-benefit analysis players will have to make and for me, I was always too impulsive and ended up using my special attack when I could. The upgrade does make you think twice, especially if you have a lot of enemies still to takedown. If you have less, then it’s not as big of a deal to use the special attack.
As we said before, there are some new moves I was able to unlock for Batman. An example is the Aerial Juggle, which is done by mashing the stun button three times, followed by the square button (PS4 version) to complete the Aerial Juggle.
A favorite upgrade has to be the Special Combo Multi Ground Takedown: difficult to say, easy to execute. This upgrade means players take out all enemies who are knocked down via a series of Batarangs that are tossed simultaneously. Special Combo moves can be added to your entire arsenal, which includes Batman’s explosive gel, combo boost, Batarang, Batclaw and more.
Batman Arkham Knight has plenty of entertaining combat for people to become immersed with, it’s just a matter of how you choose to upgrade. Batman Arkham Knight is available now for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
