Adley Stump has released a new single called “Ex to See,” a follow-up to her smash hit “Stay at Home Soldier.” The song, written and originally performed by Sam Hunt, represents a bit of branching out for Stump, who is normally thought of as a country music performer. “Ex to See” however is a pop tune complete with a rapped segment handled by guest singer Cliff Brown.
“Ex to See,” sung from Stump’s perspective, is about how a guy uses a woman to make his ex-girlfriend jealous, dating another just to parade her around and with no real affection involved. A video has also been made for the song and it would have been easy for Stump to portray herself or another woman as the party in question, out on the town with this cad and without a clue. Instead she chooses to use a much more powerful device: her face. Most of the video (with the exception of the shots of Brown) are merely close-ups of Stump singing into the microphone, showing her acting talents as she looks alternately entranced, bemused, disgusted and ultimately resigned to the fact that the whole deal was a ploy.
For having spent a relatively short amount of time in the spotlight so far, Stump has already proven to be one not to pigeonhole, and that just makes fans all the more anxious for what’s coming next. Stump’s most recent album is called “Like This (Deluxe).”
