As an actress, Niki Koss is known for her roles in such films as “Red Wing,” “The Appearing” and “Girl On The Edge”. But Koss’ creative talents run much deeper than just thespian. For in addition to her acting prowess, Koss is also making a name for herself on the other side of the camera.
In just a short time, the beautiful, young Koss has already written and directed several short films as well as created an award-winning web series, “Royals”, for The Galaxy Generation. She’s currently in the finishing stages of another show, “The Monroes” and has several more projects already lined up.
Koss will soon be seen back in her acting element when she appears in the upcoming film, “Scout’s Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse”. The Christopher Landon directed feature that tells the story of three scouts who have to use their newly acquired skills to save their town from a zombie outbreak.
I recently spoke with Koss about her role in “Scout’s Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse”, her creative passions and a few of her other upcoming projects.
James Wood: How did you become involved in “Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse”?
Niki Koss: It was through a typical audition process. A lot of the time my mom helps me with my auditions and gives me an idea of how much time I’ll need to save to prepare. I remember after she read the sides she called me up laughing hysterically and saying how good it was going to be.
JW: What was it about the script that attracted you?
NK: What attracted me the most was that it was so different from any movie I’ve seen or script that I had read. You’re not really sure if it’s a comedy or a horror film but it’s actually the perfect mix of both. I’ve tried to come up with things to compare it to but it really is one of a kind.
JW: How would you describe the story?
NK: It’s the story of a town that breaks out in a zombie apocalypse. One zombie starts it and then bites someone and it becomes a domino effect. There are three boy scouts who are best friends who ultimately have to save the day and use a lot of their scout knowledge in order to do so.
JW: What can you tell me about your character, Chloe?
NK: Chloe is one of the popular “click” kids who’s a little older than the scouts. All she cares about her image, boys and her cell phone. You see her come in and out through out the story.
JW: What was the filming process like and working with Christopher Landon?
NK: It was amazing. Everyone had such a good time on set and I would attribute it to Chris. He has such a fun attitude and made it a really fun environment.
JW: What made you decide to pursue writing and directing?
NK: When I was younger, I always loved making little movies with a home video camera and directing my friends. Shortly after I started acting professionally, I discovered that there were chunks of time where it’s really busy and other times when it quiets down a bit. It was during one of those non-busy times that the creative bones in my body started aching. That’s when I decided to start writing and directing and became obsessed with it.
JW: What are some of the differences you’ve noticed with directing?
NK: It’s a different kind of pressure. When I’m acting, I can just be on set doing my part. When you’re directing, everything is on your shoulders.
JW: Where do you find your inspiration for your writing?
NK: I get inspired by a lot of the things, like music, people and buildings. For my last show, I was actually inspired by an apartment I saw that I thought was amazing.
JW: What can you tell me about your upcoming project, “The Monroes”?
NK: It’s the story about a family who lives in The Hamptons. They are the most powerful family in America and have a son and daughter who are twins. The son is the perfect son who’s been groomed to run the company ever since he was a kid. The daughter is a total wild child who has no regard for authority and is always causing trouble. It’s currently in the final stages of editing now and very close to post-production.
JW: Are there any other projects you’re currently working on now?
NK: I’m currently writing a new show that’s completely different genre than I’ve ever done before. I also have a new project that I’ll start work on in October. It’s really an exciting time.
Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse will be released on October 30.
