Legendary, and Rock and Roll hall of fame inductee Ace Frehley was in town Saturday, September 26, 2015 as he played a rockin two hour set at Havana New Hope and the best part is there was no opening act. Just the Spaceman on stage with his band playing the songs fans know so well. He opened up with “Toys” from the Space Invader CD which came out last year. Seeing Ace in a venue like Havana is a treat. It’s small and intimate. The show was general admission and fans made their way to the front just after the doors open. Still others did not want to stand so they made their way to the bar upstairs.
Ace would toss guitar pics into the crowd and his band members , Chis Wyse, and Ritchie Scarlett would deliver the pics right into the hands of the fans down front. An ideal show for Ace would be on stage for four hours, doing most of his solo material with a few KISS songs tossed in. we got about half that, with “Strange Ways” from the Hotter Than Hell album and of course “New York Groove” from his 1978 solo album. Out of the four solo albums, Ace was the only one to take off and that song did it for him. He played “Rip It Out” which was towards the end of the show.
He did not do much from the Trouble Walkin record or Second Sighting. record. Ace is known for wearing make up and doing all kinds of stage effects with pyro with KISS. While there was no pyro, his guitar did smoke during his solo. Also during New York Groove the guitar he used had blinding, flashing lights that could blind you if you looked right at them. This show was sold out which translates to about 500 people. A good number of them got to meet Ace after the show at his paid meet and greet.upstairs. If you could not go to the meet and greet , don’t worry, he will be back at the All Things That Rock next weekend at oaks. He will not be playing but he will be signing autographs and guitars.
There was some speculation on social media that due to Pope Francis being in town, traffic would be gridlocked coming and going to the show. Nothing could be further from the truth. in fact, with everyone panicking and staying off the roads, there was even less traffic. The doors to this venue opened at 6;00 p.m.and Ace took the stage just after 9;00 p.m. Ace did three outfit changes, first arriving in a jacket, then taking the jacket off to reveal a t shirt and his ACE tattoo. For the close of the show, he had a red jacked with the Ace of Spades card on it. It was that jacket that he wore upstairs to his meet and greet.
Next month at Havana there will be Rock and Roll Over. They are not a KISS tribute band. They are a band that dress in street clothes and do not wear make up.They play KISS tunes from the 1970,s and they are good. Go to the Havana web site link in this article to find out more. Ace closed the show with Detroit Rock City, the second most recognized song done by KISS. Ace was selling t shirts and copies of his Space Invader CD, which is a really awesome record. In fact, he can come back to Havana and play that record in it’s entirety
