Hello New York Doll Collectors and doll collectors around the country. I recently spoke to a Mom, about buying a Barbie doll for her daughter, who is seven years of age. The Mom was looking specifically for an African-American doll with an ebony skin tone. Ebony, on a doll, is a deep, lustrous black skin tone. These dolls are beautiful, but very hard to find among large toy companies.
The Mattel company, in the past, released a doll collection, called Barbie Basics. One of the dolls, had a beautiful ebony skin tone. I was so in love with it, that I purchased one for myself. But as far as trying to find and purchase this doll today, it is a tremendous challenge. For this particular doll was part of a limited edition, and is now a collectors item. And although the doll is priceless, it bears a price tag, that has doubled in comparison to the time it first hit the doll market. This is not unusual, but for parents, who have gifts to purchase for more than one child, may find, that shelling out $60 or more for a Barbie, may not be feasible. So I combed and searched the internet, for dolls of this specific nature, of which this enthused and concentered Mom had described. What was found was a best kept secret. A company called, Brown Eye Dolls.
Brown Eye Dolls, is a family owned doll company, that operates outside of Chicago. And on their website, I was delighted to find, that they had an array of dolls, that fit the description of the what this Mom was looking for. I particularly loved the doll called Holiday Michelle. Holiday Michelle is in a beautiful ensemble of a berry red and a coral pink. Her dress is of a satiny type fabric, perfect for the upcoming holiday season. The top portion of the dress, is short sleeved, with a V Neck Tutu Bodice. The top, beautifully shapes her waist, and then flows into an attached ruffled and layered skirt, decorated with a pink, and bejeweled bow. She is also wearing an adorable pair of pink sandals. Her handbag, of a gold and black zigzag design, is made to compliment her dress, with the pink handles, belonging to the handbag.
The doll has a beautiful head, of curly, shoulder length hair, with pink shiny earrings, illuminating from the depths of her tresses. It’s a wonderful ensemble. And it goes so well, with her ebony tone and shade, which was what the Mom, who I was conversing with, was looking to find for her daughter. I sent her a link to the website, to view the doll, and she loved it and found it to be just right.
The wonderful thing about these types of dolls, is that the doll represents the look of so many different children. Children with beautiful ebony skin tones. It’s a doll that looks like them. I absolutely believe that this, was very important to the Mom; searching for a doll, that her child, could relate to, or even feel that “wow” there is a doll out there in the world, that looks just like me.”
What a wonderful find. Now, I no longer can say, this is a best kept secret. I think the word of searching for a doll company, that sells dolls with various shades, such as the ebony skin tones, has been out there for quite some time.
