A year ago, Ubisoft’s newest racing IP The Crew launched and since then the company has rethought the ways they can diversify the already enjoyable experience it delivers to gamers. The open-world had clear improvements that needed to be made and so the developers at Ivory Tower began work on a major update, one that is due to launch this coming Tuesday, Nov. 17.
In gaming these days, we get so wrapped up in the visuals and look of a game, and while it is a very necessary aspect, visuals can sometimes be overblown. In the case of The Crew however, changes were due to the game’s visuals as they weren’t ideal and how do you know that? You know that because Ivory Tower has made it one of the chief changes in their upcoming expansion pack The Crew Wild Run.
“The graphical overhaul is basically a full redesign of our graphic engine, which brings so much more depth and realism to the environment itself. There has been a lot of work done to the game’s draw distance as well. What’s true about the world is also true about the cars, which shine like they never have. This has also brought about dynamically changing weather, which will all have an impact on gameplay. It brings another dimension of life to the gameplay,” Ivory Tower Managing Director Ahmed Boukhelifa told atombash.com.
Visuals will be improved, as many in the game’s PC beta have already witnessed, but the game is bringing with it an exceptional amount of new content and gameplay potential. New to The Crew Wild Run is the addition of monster trucks, motorbikes and dragsters, all of which will provide new missions and quests across the game’s vast world.
With these two new vehicle types, it does make one wonder how they will ultimately influence gameplay and functions of it. Take monster trucks for example. What happens if you’re in the middle of a car chase from the cops and you are in a monster truck, do the cops then also become armed with a monster? No, and Boukhelifa explained why.
“We thought it would be cooler if only the player had monster trucks. We thought it felt more realistic in a sense not to give the monster trucks to the police. Even more than that, it was much more fun to make sure only the players had the chance to drive them. It gives the players a chance to escape the police in new and interesting ways,” Boukhelifa said.
Since the matchup then becomes tough monster truck versus feeble, weak police sedans, that means those exchanges won’t be even contests, right? Boukhelifa said they’ve done work with balancing so that “it’s definitely not a sure win situation” for players in the monster trucks.
The Crew Wild Run is delivering a brand-new competition in the form of The Summit, which puts thousands of players up against each other as they compete to be champion. “Once you make it to the Summit, you’ll take part in every kind of challenge the game has to offer, using both the classic specs and the new Wild Run specs.
“All of the points you earn through the various Summit activities – both PvP and PvE – will go toward your final overall Summit score. Every two months, the top Summit players will receive a very special prize in the form of an exclusive vehicle,” Ubisoft wrote in October on the UbiBlog.
Even before The Crew launched back in November 2014, Ivory Tower was very inclusive with the gaming community. That habit has continued since launch and players have been a big part of the feedback line as they’ve created The Crew Wild Run.
Boukhelifa spoke about the relationship they have with The Crew’s community and how they’ve built up that relationship. “We have very, very active forums. The community has been very vocal about what they like, what they don’t like, what they would change, what they wouldn’t change, etc. This allows us to engage and talk about development with the community. From month to month, we’ve built a relationship with the players and it really enriches the development process,” Boukhelifa said.
The Crew Wild Run will be “the next step” in the game’s development, though there hasn’t been any word on if there will be another iteration in the future. The Crew Wild Run launches this coming Tuesday, Nov. 17 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
