While WellGo USA has become known for their martial arts epics, they have also been bringing some of the best Asian thrillers to the US as well. Their latest, Black Coal, Thin Ice has been racking up awards, but does it have the story and visuals to back it up or will it be a case not worth revisiting?
Black Coal, Thin Ice follows an ex-cop and his ex-partner decide to follow up on investigation of a series of murders that ended their careers and shamed them, when identical murders begin again. Most Asian thrillers are a bit hard to follow just from the simple layout and this one is no different. It is not a complicated story, but it bounces through so many directions you start to lose some of the focus. Thankfully it is so compelling you can keep on track and stick with it. There are so many twists and turns that it keeps you guessing to where they are heading until the very end. While it could have been told anywhere, they took great measures to make sure the surroundings told a story as well. This is a beautiful film with each scene taking it in a different direction and feeding the scene to make it all the more compelling. One of the best is a sequence of the a car driving out of a tunnel in the snow with a bike on the side of the road. This simple scene is amazingly visually powerful for the direction it goes as it plays out.
This is one of those films that you really have to watch to get into it all. Reviews don’t do it justice as the story will captivate some and possibly lose others, but the visuals will make up for a lot of it. If you are a fan of Asian cinema then you should check out Black Coal, Thin Ice available now from WellGo USA.
