Keyboards are often taken for granted. The Logitech Illuminated Living-Room Keyboard K830 wants to make sure that does not happen.
Specifically designed as a keyboard for home entertainment systems, be it the living or the den, the focus is on the needs of those users. Light weight, and slightly smaller than your standard issue keyboard that accompanies most desktops, the feature set is such that you can control your home system, sans mouse. Do not, the key sizes and their relative positions are comparable to your average keyboard. There is no cramping of keys next to each other.
In place of the numeric keypad, Logitech has provided a touch pad. Considering the awkwardness of handling a mouse and keyboard in an entertainment based environment, this combo is the one step answer to home system control. While the purpose of this device fits a particular market, this does not mean that this keyboard would be out of place in the office environment. The K830 comes with some interesting benefits that home users and content creators may find highly advantageous.
A huge plus with this illuminated keyboard is that it is rechargeable. The pesky problem of batteries is a non-issue. According to Logitech, a full charge takes three hours. In my real world scenario, that was accurate to the second. The company also states that one charge should last ten days. In anecdotal reports online, one charge lasted considerably longer. To conserve battery life, there is an off and on switch. In a home environment illuminated keys are a must. The K830 can automatically adjust brightness. If you want more control, you can cycle through the settings, low, medium and high, manually. When not in use, the keyboard goes dark until typing begins. For some that was a downside, but for me that was a plus.
The usb receiver is part of Logitech’s system to unify peripherals. Should you have a Logitech mouse that is compatible with their system, you can use this receiver. That is a convenience step that frees up a port. The Achilles Heal of wireless devices is connectivity. No problems found here. It was literally plug-n-play simplicity. Do keep in mind, the usb receiver is very small. If you have small children, or curious Dachshunds, keep an open eye. If this apparatus is lost, the keyboard will not work.
Desktop fans who interact constantly with their computers may have reason to seriously consider this keyboard. The touchpad means that some of the touch screen features of Windows 8 are practical on a desktop that does not have a touch screen. While one could conceivable use the K830 minus a mouse, I think most desktop users will opt for one.
Not required, there is software downloadable online to extend functions. It does provide greater control of some features and extends others. It does not interfere with essential functions if not installed.
Comfort is always a consideration with a keyboard. If you have settled or the standard issue keyboard that ships with you desktop, you may not see any reason for investing in alternatives. Some makers do make acceptable keyboards. But, there are others who create keyboards that are simply too loud, too stiff or just to award for heavy use.
All keyboard are not the same. The K830 proves that design, key pressure, backlighting and a track pad make a world of difference. After installing and typing with this keyboard, I found very little that was lacking. Key size, the sound of the keys depressed and assortment of other details make this a device very worth considering.
It is certainly a top choice for home entertainment systems hands down. However it can play well with your desktop and even add desirably features missing from other keyboards. Windows 8 users will see some nice extras emerge. My only complaint about the K830 is that I wish it had blue tooth capability.
