A Great Big World proves they can do it all with new album.
A Great Big World, the Grammy-Award winning duo composed of Ian Axel and Chad King is back and better than ever with their sophomore album When The Morning Comes and let’s just say you’re going to be absolutely blown away when you hear it. Is it even possible for these guys to make a bad album? The answer is no. This is the follow-up to their 2014 debut album, Is There Anybody Out There.
The album opens up with the anthemic “All I Want Is Love,” which is very energetic and all about self-love. It includes lyrics like “Hope/You’re just a name that I hold close/There when I needed you the most/And you brought me here/Where I can learn to love myself/Without the love of someone else.” It’s very important that we have songs like this in today’s world with all the tearing down people do to one another. Way to go Ian and Chad for putting out this one. It happens to be one of my favorites too.
The second track is “Kaleidoscope” and it features guitar, piano and claps. This one is very fun and makes you want to get up on your feet and dance. It’s a feel-good song and you can’t help but smile and sing along to the track. This could be the new “Shorty Don’t Wait” for those who are familiar with the song from the group’s first album Is There Anybody Out There. The chorus is: “Violets and purples/ Diamonds and circles/ You’re my kaleidoscope,” and ” I love every minute/ You’ve got me in it/ You’re my kaleidoscope,” if anything this track will get stuck in your head after a couple listens.
The third track is “End of The World” which is very R&B infused. This is a new sound for the group but it totally works for them. The song describes being with that special someone and that they’ll love them like it’s the end of the world and won’t let anyone get in the way of their happiness. It’s a fantastic melody and the production on the track is great.
Next up is “Hold Each Other” which features upcoming Arizona rap artist Futuristic and was the leading single off the album. This one is breaking pop music barriers as it features a pronoun change for King and this was his big coming out moment.
“Oasis” is the fourth track and this one really gets you in the feels. It’s more reminiscent of their last album featuring Axel’s piano playing. With lyrics like: “When we’re lost in a desert night/And we’re chasing our paradise/When we can’t fight another fight/We’re gonna make it/You’re my oasis,” it’s sure to get you thinking. This one also features percussion sounds which adds to the song.
“Come On” adds on to what worked really well with “Oasis.” There is repetition in the chorus and also features some thoughtful lyrics. The instrumentals are also amazing in this track. This could potentially be a fan-favorite.
“Facing forward/Lights out I won’t stop running/Falling backwards, hands tied I won’t stop running/ I’ll take another sunrise/ Another hand to hold tight/ This isn’t over/ I am way too young and I won’t stop running,” are some of the lyrics included in “Won’t Stop Running.” A song simply about not giving up. King revealed in an exclusive live stream for those who purchased the When The Morning Comes deluxe album box from Fanjoy Co that this song is about his battle with Multiple Sclerosis. It’s very heartfelt and won’t fail to make you cry.
“One Step Ahead” is another sentimental track and another one that will strike you in the heart.. It’s a piano ballad and Axel said this one is about his soon-to-be wife. He proposed to her with this song. “Nobody else would forgive my mistakes/ Nobody else would’ve stayed/ One step ahead of me/ You could see what we could be/ How did you know/ Down in your bones/ That I’d come around,” are some of the lyrics included. This is a tearjerker let me tell you.
“The Future’s Right Of Me” is an uplifting surprise towards the end of the album. The track features some sweet ukulele playing from Axel. “I learned my lesson/It was wrong of me to look so far ahead/ I count my blessings one by one/ I live a life I won’t regret/ And now I finally see the future’s right of me yeah/ And now I finally see the future’s right in front of me yeah,” are some are the inspirational lyrics included. The way the verses are split between Axel and King is just right. Both of their vocals are featured evenly.
The title track, “When The Morning Comes” is magnificently written as the album in its entirety. “What happened before was a waste of time/ I don’t care anymore/ I wanna move on/ There is so much more than who’s right or who’s wrong/ We can shake it/ Let the pieces fall/ We can take it/ I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe,” is sung by King in the opening verse. The tribal drums and chants featured remind me of Disney’s The Lion King. The production on this track is A+.
The album is concluded with “Where Does The Time Go” which is another touching ballad and features guitar. “Where does the time go/ I don’t want this to end/ Where does time go/ Let’s hang on to the moment we’re in/ Of all the things we will remember/ The good, the bad and all the blessings in disguise/ Today will stick for me forever/ Even if we have to say goodbye,” are the opening verses sung by Axel and King. The song would be a great graduation song. It does not fail to stir up emotions.
The album also features “Hold Each Other” without Futuristic’s rap verses.
Overall, this album is absolutely incredible! Axel and King’s songwriting is totally on point. Being that I’ve been following the group since 2013 since Glee covered “This is The New Year” there is definitely evolution and growth on the record. The duo is all about being honest, real and writing from their heart. They have no problem showing that on this album. A new sound but the same A Great Big World.
When The Morning Comes drops this Friday Nov. 13 and you can pre-order it here. Trust me when I say you are going to want to own this album. It’s perfection all over.
