We have all heard “China: Through the Looking Glass” a few times this year, with all of the A-list celebrities who attended the Met’s gala back in May. The red carpet event at the Costume Institute Gala, an annual fund-raiser for the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute, is a crossroad of the arts, fashion and entertainment. The gala, overseen by Vogue’s Anna Wintour is held every first Monday of May, and is widely viewed as the party of the year on the social calendar. Ms. Wintour issues the dress code with the Costume Institute’s fashion exhibition in mind. Not just anyone gets invited and each year’s guest list is a good barometer of who’s in, well, vogue. The well-attended Gala was just a taste of the Met’s actual exhibit which wrapped up in September with record-breaking fanfare. Clocking in at 815,992 visitors, it usurped “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” as the most visited Costume Institute exhibition of all time, and the Met’s fifth biggest show ever.
Lucky for us, this weekend the Initiatives in Arts and Culture (IAC) organization is hosting their 17th Fashion + Design Conference: “TRAILBLAZERS”, in which the Curator for The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Andrew Bolton shares the story behind the renowned “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibit.
