“A Christmas Detour” premiered on Hallmark Channel on Nov. 28, 2015, as part of Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” holiday programming. The romance stars Candace Cameron Bure and Paul Greene.
Paige (Bure) is a bubbly young woman who is traveling to New York to spend Christmas with her fiancé Jack (Marcus Rosner). Jack has most of the qualities that Paige is looking for in a man, but he is missing a sense of humor. However, Jack is tall, dark, handsome, rich and has a lot of other great qualities that would make him a desirable husband.
Paige is about to meet her future mother-in-law Susan (Barbara Niven) and father-in-law (Michael St. John Smith) for the first time. While Paige is visiting, they will plans for their wedding.
Her travel plans change when a snowstorm grounds the airplane in Buffalo. Paige joins up with a sour bar manager, Dylan (Greene) and a married couple, Frank (David Lewis) and Maxine (Sarah Strange) to travel to New York City by rental car.
The four travelers are in a one-car accident on a country road and end up having to spend the night at an quaint inn in a colorfully decorated town that celebrates Christmas enthusiastically.
Paige and Dylan alternate between attraction and repulsion. Paige is anxious to join her fiancé, even though she is attracted to Dylan. They have an argument and Paige finds a ride out of town the next morning. She leaves without saying goodbye.
Paige arrives the lavish mansion that belongs to her prospective in-laws and is greeted by Jack, who introduces her to his parents. The meeting is a disaster from the start. Susan is a haughty snob who lacks the real class to make her future daughter-in-law feel welcome.
Jack fails to stand up to his overbearing mother. He wants Paige to go along with the wedding plans Susan made for them and not challenge her so things will go smoothly
Jack should be putting his future wife first, but he seems passive when it comes to his parents, which is not a good dynamic for a marriage. Besides, Jack is critical of Paige’s snorting laugh, which he has never heard, because he has never made her laugh. Quite honestly, the snorting laugh is a habit that would only become more irritating with time, so he may have a point there.
The intended marriage appears to be doomed. Dylan finds Paige having dinner at the country club and Paige makes a life-changing decision.
Candace Cameron Bure (“Full House,” “Fuller House,” “The View”) has also starred in Hallmark’s “Let It Snow,” Puppy Love, ‘ “Aurora Teagarden: A Bone to Pick” and “Moonlight & Mistletoe.” Barbara Niven has appeared in Hallmark’s “Murder She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery” and “Cedar Cove”).
