Mayim Bialik was able to have a chat about STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering and Math) and calculators through Texas Instruments (TI) with whom she is brand ambassador for TI Education Technology and advocate for STEM for students and in schools. TI currently has a back to school contest for students to show how much they love their calculator.
Neuroscientist Mayim Bialik portrays neuroscientist Dr. Amy Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. Yes, she really is a math and science geek. She comes by her love of STEM naturally, both her parents were teachers. She and her ex-husband homeschool their two sons, almost 10 and 7. She believes in starting them as early as possible in STEM education. Her boys know the basics of their TI calculators although they don’t yet know what all the buttons do on it.
Oh, the contest mentioned earlier, it’s about why you love your TI calculator. Done via social media (Twitter and Instagram) the contest wants students (13+) and teachers to submit a photo or video showing why they love their TI calculator for a chance at the grand prize of a live visit from Mayim Bialik (where she’ll talk about her STEM background and have a Q&A session) and a classroom set of 30 TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculators. These are brand new calculators for this year and come in a variety of interesting colors like Radical Red, Positively Pink or Plum Pi. To view the official rules and see all of the submissions go to ilyTIcontest.com. Bialik gave a hint that may help you win. They are looking for something that is creative and imaginative. Last year’s selfie contest was won by North Bullitt High School because they used the whole high school to show the TI technology and school spirit. But you’ll have only until September 18, 2015 to enter.
One of Bialik’s projects outside of being parent, actress and spokeswomen is her new website GrokNation. She wants to look for a meaningful way to approach different issues these include news, Hollywood, science, parenting, women and faith. Since it went live a couple of weeks ago, she has written a number of blog posts, sometimes more than one in a day. The site is topical, functional and easily navigated. It is well worth the visit.
How does she have time to do all of this? She doesn’t watch TV – not even her own show. Her fans are not necessarily following her example. The ninth season of The Big Bang Theory will premiere on September 21, 2015. It has dominated its timeslot the last few years.
One question that was off topic was “ How is it working with Jim Parsons after he has played God on Broadway?” Her reply, “He hasn’t yet asked us to call him that.” Amy will continue with Sheldon for now.
