Get ready for the return of a good old summertime tradition taking place this coming week in Arendtsville, PA. It’s the 93rd Annual South Mountain Fair. Held each summer onsite at the South Mountain Fairgrounds, the fair offers one of the best family-friendly, wholesome outings around in south central Pennsylvania, complete with rides, games, agricultural events, contests, live entertainment, and so much more.
Though some 4-H events will take place days earlier, the fair’s official open dates are from Tuesday, Aug. 18 to Saturday, Aug. 22. Hours of operation on Tuesday through Friday will be from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday operations will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Opening day highlights will include swine judging, three Monster Energy Motocross Stunt Rider Shows, and a food auction in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m., with proceeds to benefit a local charity. Sheep and goat judging will be the 4-H spotlight for Wednesday’s installment with entertainment highlights including a Draft Horse Pulling Contest at 6:30 p.m. and Peak 98, Battle of the Bands at 7:30 p.m. Thursday fun will continue with calf and steer judging, a chainsaw carving show at 7 p.m., and then a fabulous fireworks display to light up the night at 9:30 p.m. Friday’s highlights will include goat and cattle shows and judging, antiques small gas engine demonstrations at 4 p.m., a chainsaw carving show at 7 p.m., and a free concert performance by Country singer legend and Grand Ole Opry star John Conlee at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 22 will be the final day of the fair, and doors open early, at 10 a.m. for the South Mountain Myotonic Goat Show. The fair entertainments officially open to the public at 1 p.m. That day’s sendoff will include a number of repeated features as well as original happenings. There will be another antique small gas demonstration taking place throughout the day and two chainsaw carving shows—one at 3:30 p.m. and the other at 6:30 p.m. Signature highlights will include the South Mountain Falling Fainters Goat Show at 3 p.m., a 4-H/FAA livestock sale at 4 p.m., and a parade of antique farm equipment at 4:30 p.m. Musical entertainments for the day will include the sounds of Gravy, a local band performing classic rock and old school country hits, and Cheap Sneakers, another local classic rock band. Both events are free and open to the public. The South Mountain Fair is a well-loved summertime tradition that draws in crowds of people. It is the perfect event to bring family and friends for good-old entertainment, rides, exhibits, and more. Come be a part of it all this year starting Tuesday. Regular admission is just $7 and includes unlimited carnival rides. Children under 36 inches in height are admitted for free.
