Phuket is one of Thailand’s most iconic tourist destinations and the island’s clear blue green water and white sand beaches attract countless visitors each year. Holiday seekers have numerous choices when it comes to accommodations, but I recently discovered a hidden oasis called Boathouse by Montara. Boathouse is a boutique hotel with 38 rooms situated directly on breathtaking Kata Beach in southwest Phuket. This full service resort and spa offers something for everyone along with a few unexpected options for active or relaxing holiday getaways. If you are interested in learning more or want to make a reservation, please contact The Boathouse directly by calling +66 (0)76 330 015-17, +66 (0)76 333 463-7 or book online.
Rediscover yourself at Boathouse at Kata Beach Phuket
The Boathouse at Kata Beach Phuket is a much loved boutique resort, with exclusive rooms and suites, including the famous “Boathouse Wine & Grill” and “RE KÁ TA Beach Club” and wedding venue.Boathouse brings years of experience to creating your most special day. From strategic pre-planning to every last wedding day detail, or should you simply wish to renew your vows on the spur of the moment, the experts ensure stress-free celebrations, full of memories designed to last for years to come.
1. Surfing at RE KÁ TA Surf School
You may not be aware of it, but Kata Beach is well known as the surfing capital of Phuket. While the surfing is not on the level of what you would find in Hawaii, California or Australia, its consistent waves and gentle swells make it the perfect place for novice surfers and beginners. RE KÁ TA Surf School at Boathouse offers guests a choice of lessons including stand up paddle board or private surf lessons. The friendly instruction is done by the hotel’s trained surf pros from Quicksilver who teach surf safety, board control, how to stand and catch waves, as well as more advanced techniques as needed. If you are not a guest at the hotel, you can still take lessons May to September and all surf students have complete access to facilities at RE KÁ TA Beach Club at Boathouse including private sun loungers, all-day water and fruit services, showers, and a changing room with personal lockers.
2. Fine Dining at Boathouse Wine & Grill
Boathouse Wine & Grill is legendary in Phuket and has long been a favorite spot for locals and tourists who are looking for special occasion dining. It’s beachfront location and stunning views make it one of the most romantic spots on the island for dinner. You can dine inside or out and the high gloss polished wood, linen table cloths and baby grand piano give the venue a nostalgic and endearing old school vibe. They have live jazz several nights a week and many of the staff have worked at the restaurant for decades. The award winning wine cellar is always a hit with diners and you’re likely to see as many locals as in house guests on any given evening. The menu is a combination of both Asian and European dishes and the kitchen is headed up by Chef Bryan Burger who is originally from South Africa. Admittedly I did not really try any of the Thai food, but the French food was excellent. There interactive “Tableside” menu provides excitement as flambéed meats, seafood and desserts are served up at the table by the chef. I loved the classic Steak Diane pan-seared beef tenderloin with mushrooms and flambéed with cognac and the Rock Lobster Ravioli were the highlights of the menu.
3. World Class Wine Cellar
Wine lovers will be spoilt for choice with the award winning wine cellar at Boathouse. The hotel boasts one of the largest wine cellars in Phuket and they hold the distinct honor of being presented with the prestigious Wine Spectator Awards every year since 2006. They have over 30 wines available by the glass as well as a collection of more than 800 new and old world wines on site. You will discover rarified vintages and some of my favorites such as Zinfandel, Grgich Hills, Napa Valley, California, 2005 and the Amarone Valpolicella Classico, Allegrini 2005 from Italy. They have a resident sommelier on hand to help you navigate the impressive wine list and they also offer a “wine flight” where you can do a mini wine tasting and try three preselected wines for an affordable set price. Guests of the resort will also find a nice selection of wines both in their room and offered through room service.
4. Healthy Dining at RE KÁ TA House
RE KÁ TA House is probably one of the most delightful surprises at Boathouse. This all day dining outlet is located right on the beach and adjacent to the pool, the pool bar and the hotel’s separate coffee shop and clothing boutique located on the second level. Of course you can find your typical burgers and pastas, but I was surprised at how many healthy options they had for both breakfast and lunch. The salads in particular where fresh and vibrant and they offer grilled fish for breakfast as well as throughout the day. Perhaps the most interesting dishes I tried were the Curried Crab Cakes Egg Benedict and the French Toast Soufflé with “Millionaire Bacon”. Fresh oysters, deep fried soft shell crab and calamari along with avocado toast and simple omelets were other favorites. In addition to the fresh food, RE KÁ TA House has tropical cocktails and Thai canapés at the beachfront bar and a daily Happy Hour from 5-6pm and again from 10-11pm. An upbeat party vibe is created by a nightly DJ and special theme nights that bring in the crowds.
5. Oceanfront Rooms & Suites
Boathouse is a fairly small property with only 38 rooms available for guests. It’s this exclusivity and charm that makes the property so appealing. There are several room categories to choose from and all rooms are ocean facing. The property was refurbished in 2012 and the rooms are contemporary and bright with a tasteful cobalt blue, white and beige color scheme with a subtle nautical theme. All the rooms have hardwood floors, private balconies or terraces with ocean views, free Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection, Flat-screen 32’’ LCD TV & IPTV system and Individual espresso machines with Cafes Richard Grands Crus coffee pods as well as a selection of Ronnefeldt teas. My room had a king-size bed with separate lounge area and a private terrace overlooking the pool with views of the ocean. My bathroom was enormous and included a full-size bath tub with separate rain head shower and double sinks. I fully appreciated the extensive minibar and wine list selected by the sommelier as well as the menu of music on the television. Just steps away from the beach, it is idyllic and relaxing and the perfect island escape.
6. Beachfront Cooking Classes
Every resort worth its salt offers a Thai cooking class, and the one at Boathouse is exceptional. Taking place in the ocean front Wine & Grill restaurant, you are protected from the sun but still enjoy the sounds and breezes from the beach which is just steps away. The cooking class includes instruction of how to make several Thai dishes, and of course you get to eat them. I made perhaps one of the best Duck Curries I have ever tasted, and the Seafood with Yellow Curry Powder was as good as anything I have had made by a professional chef. The Chef was very easy going and approachable and was constantly giving cooking tips, encouraging questions and allowing guests to get involved with every step of the cooking process. To top it off, everyone gets a certificate of completion and gets to keep the apron as a thoughtful souvenir.
7. Pampering at RE KÁ TA Spa
My favorite spot at any resort is always the spa, and RE KÁ TA Spa at Boathouse should be a main priority when you visit. It’s located in a separate villa overlooking the restaurant below and has amazing views of the ocean from the private deck. The spa is comfortable and serene with bright and airy treatment rooms. They have a diverse menu of east meets west therapies including sports massage for athletes, traditional Thai, Swedish, Ayurvedic massage, plus relaxing aromatherapy and restorative beauty treatments. On my visit I unwound with a 60 minute massage that combined the healing powers of aromatherapy, classic Thai stretching massage, and deep pressure point kneading to relive muscle tension and stress. The courteous and professional staff made sure to ask about preferences such as where I like to be massaged, where to avoid, and how hard or soft to make it. You will also find beauty services such as facials, scrubs, manicures, pedicures, body waxing, sunburn treatment and skin bronzing.
